What would you do?Final output for SDTV 4:3 has to be 720x480. Camcorder only records 1920x1080. No footage yet shot. How to proceed?

Re: What would you do?Is your camcorder AVCHD or HDV?
Assuming you're editing with Premiere Elements, set up your project for AVCHD (assuming you're shooting in AVCHD) and put your video footage on the timeline. Use Share/Computer/AVI to output your video. Open a new video project, one set up for 4:3 DV. Important your AVI footage into. You'll have to decide, of course, whether your want your footage letterboxed or if you want it full-screen (with the sides trimmed off). Re: What would you do?For me the problem isn't in how to make it 4:3. I'd probably do it Steve's way (yes, it's AVCHD). The problem is in the original recording. It seems like it would be difficult to record 16:9, framing to 16:9 on the screen or viewfinder, but knowing that the sides were going to be cut off of the final product.
EDIT: I suppose I could make up a little cropping frame for the camcorder screen that would only show me the 4:3. Hmmmm......kinda clunky, but it might work. Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Re: What would you do?Dave, why not 16:9 ?
Is there a reason why you are still using 4:3 ? 1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

Re: What would you do?Prepping to make a TV commercial, local stations. They don't do anything in HD at the local level. It has to be 720x480.
First time at this. I do have my older MiniDV SD Panny. I may use it. Not sure yet. Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Re: What would you do?Yes, but 720x480 can be 4:3 or 16:9. Do they require 4:3??
Re: What would you do?No, but if I do 16:9 it'll end up cropped top, bottom, and sides. I don't think that my client would like that. I suppose I could discuss it with him.

Re: What would you do?Most local stations prefer HD now, at least 720p.
I suggest you get some info from them first. 1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

Re: What would you do?
Yeah, I already did before I made the post. SD 720x480. Several small local stations all under the same ownership - apparently can't afford to go HD yet. It does seem a bit strange because the network feeds are broadcast in HD when showing HD programming, but everything local is SD. I understand that they may not have the equipment for live HD broadcast (news, etc.), but I'd think that if they could broadcast HD from the network that they could do HD local commercials. I guess I don't understand how it works. Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Re: What would you do?Are you saying that they even prefer 4:3 over 16:9?

Re: What would you do?I'm sure they'd take either one, but since everything they're broadcasting that's local is 4:3, if I submitted a 16:9 it would end up with the 16:9 inside the 4:3 box, resulting in black bars on all four sides (at least on a widescreen TV). Right?

Re: What would you do?I think it would cut off the right and left sides and have bars on the top and bottom.
Didn't realize there were stations that weren't HD and at least broadcasting in 16:9 by now. At least 80% of everything on the local Atlanta stations is HD now an almost always broadcast in 16:9 I get black bars on the top and bottom of my TV all the time and the right and left sides are cut off. I hate it when the box score for a baseball game is in the top left corner, I can't even see most of it as it is cut off 1. Re: What would you do?So you must have a 4:3 TV Chuck?
I made a specific point of watching our local noon news today just for the purpose of seeing the commercials. Can't say I've ever done that before! The show and commercials were 4:3, with black to dark blue gradated bars with ghosted station logo filling in the areas on the left and right. There were two exceptions to this. Our local electric company aired a 16:9 commercial, as did an insurance company. These were kept within the confines of the 4:3 area, resulting in black bars on the top and bottom in addtion to the aforementioned gradated bars on the left and right. I can't say that I liked the look very much. The soaps started a little while ago. HD 16:9, filling the widescreen, and all the commercials were from the network, also in HD 16:9 filling the screen. I'm going back to work now. Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Re: What would you do?Still have a 4:3 32" Sanyo in the living room as the main TV.
My projector downstairs is 16:9 HD. The Sanyo is over 15 years old now and still works perfectly. I only have one HD Directv reciever connected to the projector and my computer, all of the others are analog. 1.
