I use Verbatim almost exclusively but have also had success with TDK. Here is a great resource on the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of DVD media.

This question comes up often so I wanted to make it easily accessible.

Other considerations when burning DVDs for highest compatibility:
-R discs are reported to be the most compatible, +R is next, and +/-RW are the least.
Burning at the slowest speed possible will give much better results. If you can burn to a folder and then to disc at 4x it would be a plus. If you need to burn from Premiere Elements you best bet it to use discs with a write speed no greater than 8x.

I've gone to Wallmart, Staples and Office Depot and I cannot find discs less than 16x.
It took me 18 months to use up my 4x so I figured I go buy some more and to my surprise there was none.
Thanks Richard

I now use TDK 16X -R for community access cable play, 16X +R for backups of those shows which were supplied to me. Since I bought my Benq DL DVD burner last year I have not had *any* problems with my DVDs. I still periodically test them with Nero CD-DVD Speed Scantest and have found no problems playing or bad blocks.
I just bought 16X -R Taiyo Yuden, reputed to be 'best of breed', but haven't used any yet.

I use Verbatim White Ink jet printable. I buy them from Microcenter on sale for $16.99 per 50 on sale or $24.99 regularly. Rarely if ever have a bad disc.

For those who have never heard of Taiyo Yuden, this web site does a good of explaining why you need to look at who actually manufactured the disks rather than what company put their name on it. http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htmThis second site http://www.best-dvd-burning-software-re ... asp#blanks has some of the same information in more summary form as well as recommendations on where to buy. There is also a link to a download that will verify the manufacturer of your blank media. The top recommended online store is http://www.supermediastore.com. Here is a sample of their current pricing on Taiyo Yuden 8x printable hub, including fre shipping. I just ordered a 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden Premium -R discs.
I've been using that cheap crap from Staples, or where ever I could find a bargain, and have been having nothing but grief.
I always burn to folder, then use Nero to burn the .vob files at the slowest speed possible (6x in my case).
The cheap discs will play great on my PC with WinDVD, but when I put them in DVD players for TV viewing, towards the last 1/2 hour of a large project, I get data drop out that is unbearable (both audio and video). I thought it might be a particular DVD Player, but I have 2 players, a Playstation2, and an XBox, and all of them drop data towards the end, but the disc plays fine on my PC.
Small projects of an hour or less work okay, but large burns (4.73gig) drop data on the last 1/2 hour or so.
I'm wondering if my burner might be the culprit (Memorex DVD 16x), but store bought DVD Movies that I rip and burn seem to work fine, it's only the large projects from PE1 that seem to have data loss issues towards the end of disc.
It's very depressing to complete a large project, burn successfully, then feel paranoid to distribute to friends and family cause it runs like crap on their home DVD units.
I'm hoping the the Taiyo Yuden disc's take me to the promised land...

I ordered a 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden premium grade -R from SupermediaStore.com. Free shipping and they will be here on 17 Dec. 07. $31.99 PER 100. 32 cents a disc. What a great deal. I recently bought a new DVD player (Toshiba) and my Imation DVD - R won't play the audio.Video is good. I'm hoping the Taiyo Yuden will fix that.
Thanks Richard
