Specific to Premiere Elements version 2021
by CE3 » Tue Dec 14, 2021 1:30 pm
Hi Folks....
I'm a new user of Premiere Elements. It is 2021. I know very little about video editing or cameras, for that matter. So, I'm relieved to find this forum. Seems like a well-informed and helpful crowd. I'm dragging clips to the timeline to preview and it sends my CPU to 100% then after a bit it settles to 75 or 80. Is this a normal range for just a preview ? I've no idea. The system is a little old but I use it for architectural stuff. It renders pretty complex designs okay. I will try and attach a profile of my system.....any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Coleman

I don't use Premiere Elements anymore (I use Premiere Pro), but just wanted to welcome you to Muvipix. I'm sure one of the Premiere Elements power users will chime in here soon.

Thanks Peru.....I considered Pro but thought it might be a bit out of range for me. Perhaps in the future.....
P.S. I'm filming MP4 at 59 frames / second.

Microsoft Windows 10 version 1903 or later (version 1909 recommended); 64-bit versions only; Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 is not supported.

Hi TTR..... Thanks for the reply. I thought "not supported" meant they were not involved in tech issues with earlier versions. Does it, in practice, mean the software won't run properly ? I had TEN when it first came out and could't bear it. I am quite sure they resolved all issues by now. Perhaps that's the way to go. What kind of CPU useage do others see ? Is Elements a CPU hog.....no idea. Thanks again.

What is the media you're adding to your timeline? What device produced the video?
Open one of your source video clips in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the text of this report and paste it to this forum.
Surges like you're experience are nearly always related to the media you're working with. With this additional information we'll better be able to advise you.

I was a VERY reluctant 'upgrader' from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I didn't perform the upgrade until Windows 7 support ended. I shouldn't have worried too much as, with some tweaks to settings, I was able to make Windows 10 look virtually the same as Windows 7. Now I am on Windows 11 and aside from one or two niggles (e.g. no Snipping tool that I can find) all seems OK. My advice? Make a system back up then take the plunge to Windows 10 and see if your issues are solved. If not you can always re-install the backed up image and think again.

Hi John, Good idea....I have an Aeomi suite. So, I should be able to backup. Do you think I should go straight to Version 11 if appropriate ?
Hi Steve, I think I got this right but it's nothing I can decipher...... Also, thanks for all the videos, books, etc. That's what brought me here. MediaInfo:

Welcome to Muvipix . Not to step on any answer that John may give, but here's a link to a ZDNet article on how to still upgrade to Windows 10 for free. https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how ... 0-upgrade/I used this method some years ago and didn't have any issues. I also used it to upgrade several clients' computers without any problem. The article was last updated August 10th of this year, so it seems to be current and if anything's changed it would likely be mentioned and amended, or the article deleted. It seems to me that if the upgrade to Win 10 goes well and you're happy then you can upgrade to Win 11. The only caveat is that Win 11 has some system requirements that Win 10 didn't, so it's possible that your system might not meet one or more of those requirements. If so, Win 10 will be supported for quite some time. One other comment, prefaced by saying that I just recently upgraded to a new system that I had been using for 11 years. If your system is old enough to be using Win 8, it might be time to consider a new system instead of attempting an in-place upgrade to Win 10 or 11. I do understand that budgets don't always allow. One thing I can tell you is that the folks here will try to help you make things work on your present system if that's possible.
Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

I would have said exactly the same thing Dave, but would have added that if the free upgrade was no longer available there is always the option of buying a used Win 10 licence key on the (used) software market (which is legal in Europe; is it also legal in the US?). Then one can also upgrade that to Win 11. Your point is also well made about the PC spec and whether a PC upgrade might be worth considering.

Thanks Dave and John, It sounds as though, the first thing to try is moving to Win 10. Third party Kinguin apparently sells a license for $30.00. Or even better the ZDNET link. I will order an external SDD and backup my system. As to the system itself....I gather the consensus to be, that I'm a bit behind the times. If I upgrade my system am I better of building or off the rack, from a value perspective. I've seen some custom builds on YouTube in the $750.00 range that people appear to enjoy. Would something in that range be adaquate for Elements ? Thanks again for the input I'll let you know how the move to 10 develops.

I have always done self builds. As for which way to jump it really depends on budget. Take a look here for current CPU benchmarks https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.htmlKeep in mind that rendering video is CPU intensive. As a general rule of thumb anything with a benchmark score of 20000 or better should be OK and reasonably future capable. Clearly if you think that you will be dealing seriously with 4K video then the higher the CPU benchmark the better but of course that swings two ways and the price performance ratio changes very dramatically above around the 25000 benchmark with one or two exceptions. My last upgrade was about eighteen months ago when I moved from Intel i7 6700K based system (benchmarked at 8952) to my present AMD Ryzen 9 3900K (benchmarked at 32802) which I reckon will now satisfy my PC performance needs for a few years to come.

Hi folks, Instead of trying to resuscitate my aging machine, I'm looking at this machine.....does it seem as though this may run Premiere Elements to an acceptable level ? My intentions are to film equestrian activities mostly in indoor arenas with poor or unpredictable lighting. These structures are typically 20 meters X 60 meters. So a zoom is required. The structures often have clerestory windows introducing some pretty garish natural light. I film with a Lumix FZ300..... All videos will be loaded to youtube or a web page. I don't require a lot of fussy effects but do want it to appear professional (mostly).

I always recommend a minimum rating of 10,000 for a CPU running Premiere Elements on PassMarks's benchmarks. Your processor scores 20,000. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.htmlAnd with 32 gigs of RAM, you've definitely go power to spare. The only weak link is your hard drive -- with a mere 500 gig of space. I think you'll find it filling up pretty quickly. Even if you use a second or external drive for your media files, I think you'll find that C drive filling up pretty quickly. But that depends on how many programs you install. If you can keep 100 gig of it free and you use a second or external drive for your media and project files, this machine should move like greased lightning.
