Talk about anything here.

Hi, camera experts.
As I work with photographers, I frequently hear some boasting that their DSLR is mirror-less.
I understand that this means that there are no (or fewer) moving parts and it makes for a lighter camera -- but what is the main advantage of a mirror-less camera?
Also, I'm kind of surprised to hear that mirrors are used at all in modern digital cameras. I've assumed that digital cameras simply recorded the image using some sort of CCD circuitry and that what you see in the little LCD panel on the back of a camera is simply what the CCD sees. What role does a camera play in a DSLR?
Thanks for helping me look smarter than I am!

I thought that some cameras used mirrors for the viewfinder but I could be wrong.

I've got an A6000 and I like it a lot. Its more compact that a DSLR, the electronic viewfinder is easy to use and the burst mode is very fast (11 FPS at 24MP) . It's not top of the range but I'm pleased with the picture quality and the speed it focuses. The video isn't bad either - although it's only 1080p. This is a full size image straight from the camera. Is the term 'DSLR' (mis)used to describe the camera body shape and the fact that it (may) use interchangeable lenses?
In terms of 'classic' SLR cameras, DSLR used to describe mirrorless cameras is an oxymoron.

In my search for a new camera that also would record excellent video a Sony A6500 was recommended. Due to a great price I selected a Nikon 7500 instead. Still great photography and very nice video but not as good as the Sony A6500 especially when it comes to auto focus for video. The mirrorless DSLR cameras are becoming the video go to standard for events and other video projects.
