The vanished internal optical driveEvery 5 years or so I get the urge to upgrade my laptop. This cycle I am disheartened to learn that most manufacturers no longer include an internal OD. (No, I don't wanna drop upwards of $4K for a Falcon.) I know that an external OD can do the job, but when I travel, and even at my desk, I'm not looking to add yet another piece of equipment. I am interested to learn how the muvipix community is responding to this development when it comes time to upgrade. If you know of a good computer for video editing and DVD authoring w/ an integral OD, plz drop a name. I'm resisting going the external OD route, but I realize times have changed once again. Re: The vanished internal optical driveI love Lenovo laptops and most of them still come with an optical drive

Re: The vanished internal optical driveHP is still making a lot of laptops with optical drives in them. Watch out though for the touchpad. Some of the HPs don’t have separate buttons for the left and right mouse buttons. Not a big deal if you use an external mouse, but worth mentioning.

Re: The vanished internal optical driveOptical Drives are just becoming less and less a part of my workflow that it is rare that I use one. In those times I do I have a external one to use.
Personally, I think that it is easier to keep up with the technology instead of drawing a line in the sand. It might make sense to see what the impact is to move your DVD's to an external hard drive system. Sidd "Life moves pretty fast. Re: The vanished internal optical driveI'm still doing DVDs because I haven't found a satisfactory way of creating menus on flash drives.
Re: The vanished internal optical drive
I really appreciate the links Chuck. No matter how often or persistent I tried to search for an OD on Amazon and Newegg, my efforts were never smarter. Re: The vanished internal optical drive
So true about the futility of drawing a line in the sand. Some of my customers prefer DVDs, and a well made menu is much more pleasing than the product on a thumb drive, HD, etc. Panasonic AG-AC130A, Sony HDR-SR11, Garmin Virb, Dji Osmo Action, and Contour video cameras, VEGAS Pro 16.0 i7-3740QM CPU @ 2.7GHz, 16 GB RAM, Win 10 Home Premium 64 bit,
Re: The vanished internal optical driveI can certainly appreciate the convenience of a DVD. just pop-in and play.
I have started posting my videos to my vimeo account. I then e-mail the links to the folks that request them. I like that they can be viewed on a multitude of devices, from computer, to smartphone, to streaming to TV. My preference is that if someone looses the DVD I have to send another one. This way I just resend the link. I can also set the privacy on the video so that it will need a password to play. You could always create an e-mail with a menu page that hyperlinks to your videos. I still agree that DVD's are just plug and play Sidd "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." ..... Ferris Bueller
Re: The vanished internal optical driveWell, I finally was able to find this computer on Amazon: 2018 Newest Lenovo Business Flagship Laptop 15.6" Anti-Glare Touchscreen, Intel 8th Gen i7-8550U Quad-Core Processor, 12GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD-RW, Webcam, HDMI, Dolby Audio, 802.11ac, Windows 10
I have no idea if it would be adequate for my needs. I shoot in 720 x 60p and do multicamera editing. In your opinion would this computer suffice? I use both Movie Studio 14.0 Platinum and Vegas Pro 14.0 and will upgrade to MSP 15.0 when I get a new computer. Specs include Intel Integrated HD Graphics. I've always had an Nvidia graphics card and wonder if I won't be pleased (or the NLE will be aggravatingly slow) w/o a dedicated graphics card. Your thoughts? Re: The vanished internal optical driveYou should be able to get the same laptop or similar model with an enhanced graphics card, usually nVidia. That model is similar to mine only mine is a few years older. I can edit HD with Premiere Elements 15 without any trouble. I do have it maxed out at 16GB of RAM however and have the upgraded video card and I also upgraded the standard hard drive with a 1TB 7200rpm drive.
You can see my specs below in the signature, the Lenovo W530. 1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.
2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.
Re: The vanished internal optical drive
Chuck- It sounds like you are recommending a better video card than stock. I'll have to look into that to see if it is offered/obtainable. That specific Lenovo (w/o the nVidia card) is fairly cheap at $711. Panasonic AG-AC130A, Sony HDR-SR11, Garmin Virb, Dji Osmo Action, and Contour video cameras, VEGAS Pro 16.0 i7-3740QM CPU @ 2.7GHz, 16 GB RAM, Win 10 Home Premium 64 bit,
Re: The vanished internal optical driveIf you can get a better card it definitely won't hurt that's for sure.
