Today I created my first star trail photo. My son and I spent about 2 hours in a field last night photographing the night sky. I used Tony Northrup's tips to create the photo and I'm happy with how it turned out. There were many airplanes that flew through the field of view and I had to delete those from the compilation, but I still think it turned out nice: GH4 on tripod 12mm Oly lens (manual focus, no image stabilization) f/2.0, 30" shutter ISO800 Photos processed in Lightroom CC Photos compiled using Starstax What do you think of this? hmm. I'm guessing you found a clear view of the sky without trees, lights, etc. Aimed at Polaris, took a shot every 30 seconds for two hours. Then processed. Is that right?
However you accomplished it, it is beautiful. Imagine this as a puzzle!

That's exactly right Patrice. I edited the photos in Lightroom, exported them as JPGs, and used "StarStax" (free software) to stack all of the images together. The first "stack" had aircraft traffic forming bright straight lines in the image, so I had to remove those. There was so much traffic that half of the images were lost, thus the gaps in the trails.
Next time I would like to take photos later in the night to avoid aircraft traffic. I will also change the angle so that the horizon is included in the frame for reference. That will eliminate the "full circle" effect but I think it will look good.
