what setting to use?

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 10.

what setting to use?

Postby hpharley90 » Tue Nov 13, 2012 5:07 pm

A friend of mine gave me some still pictures and some video.
I would like to burn him Blu-ray disc.
The video has an .AVI file extension but is HD.
Here is a screen shot of said clip in Gspot.

I would like to know what setting to use when I bring it into PRE10 and what size I should have the stills.
Right now the stills are 4288 x 3216 jpeg.

Well, he's unfortunately given you an MJPEG-AVI, a format that Premiere Elements generally doesn't like.

You may need to convert the file before you can use it.

The best solution for this is to download Windows MovieMaker 2.6 classic from the Microsoft site (Live MovieMaker won't work), load the video file into it and then output it as a DV-AVI. It's not going to be a hi-def file -- but you will be able to work with the file in Premiere Elements.

Before you do that, try using the clip in a 720p 30 project preset. You should find one in the ntsc dslr presets and the ntsc hdv presets. I'd try the dslr preset first if there is one that matches. Once you open the new project, drag the mjpeg clip to the timeline first by itself and PrE 10 will ask if you want to change the preset if it's not a match.

While mjpeg video can give PrE problems, in my experience it often works well. You do have the codec installed, so I would definitely give it a try.

The dimensions of a 720p project are 1280x720 pixels and the pixel aspect ratio is square. As for your stills, those also have a square pixel aspect ratio. So, a 1280x720 still will exactly fill the frame. Resize your 4288 x 3216 stills down accordingly.

I agree with Bob, version 10 and 11 handle MJPEG much better than in the past.
Give the 720p preset a try it should work fine :)

Thank you so much Bob.

After I made my first post and before I read any replies I tried a preset and it was the wrong one and I got the message Bob wrote.
(PrE 10 will ask if you want to change the preset if it's not a match.)

When I checked project settings I had this.

When I brought clips to the time line I had no red line.
Everything is good.
Pre 10 seems to handle these files very well.

Thank you. :-D
