Specific to Premiere Elements Version 10.

bring all into timeline

Postby hpharley90 » Sun Oct 14, 2012 5:26 pm

I have 26 clips that are 32 minutes in length in my project panel. I would like to bring them in all at one time.
All the clips are from rolling skating birthday party for a 5 year old that I would like to select all and drag onto time line.
Not working. Can I achieve this?
Thanks
Richard

I assume you're using Windows, and that you mean that your 26 clips have a combined total length of 32 minutes. It should be as simple as doing a Ctrl-A to select all, then click and drag the selected media from the Media Bin to the timeline. You can also use the standard Windows conventions of Ctrl-click or Shift-click to select any or all.

Yes it's in my signature. The select all doesn't seem to be the problem. I shade them all no problem but they won't drag and drop.
If I do one clip at a time the drop down menu gives you the option of inserting to timeline but doing multiple clips that option does not show up.
I would like to know this procedure because I go through this all the time.
I end up moving one clip at a time. It takes to long.
Thanks
Richard

Yes - in your signature. Sorry about that. Now you've really got me curious as to why this isn't working. :-k

It's been that way a long time. Try the "Insert" keyboard shortcut "," and see if that works. I don't have version 10, but I think it should still work -- it does in version 7. If not, you'll have to actually drag the selected group to the timeline.

He does say in his initial post that dragging to the timline doesn't work for him. I tried it in V10 before my initial reply just to confirm that it really did work for me. I checked again later to see if the Insert function was available from the drop-down menu, and it was. I have to wonder what the difference is.

I'm using Premiere Pro exclusively now. So, I don't have PrE 10 to check anything. The last version of Premiere Elements I had was version 7 and I left it installed. In version 7, selecting multiple clips in the project panel and right clicking to get the context menu does not show the Insert option. It does show if only one clip is selected. Just as Richard described. Using the "insert" shortcut, the comma key, does insert all the selected clips into the timeline even though the menu item is missing. And, of course, dragging the group to the timeline works.

It isn't clear to me whether he was dragging the selected items to the timeline or was using the menu item. If dragging to the timeline doesn't work for him, I have no answer -- it should work. If the comma key works, he should be able to use it to move the selected items to the timeline as he wanted.

Richard, could you give us a little more information about what's happening? And, please try the comma key. Please let us know if it's working. Thanks!

Until I read your post I was not aware that there was supposed to be an insert option in the right-click menu in the project panel, so I had never used it (I usually just drag what I want to the timeline). When selecting multiple clips it doesn't show up for me either. I suspect that it must be by design, although I don't know why. It does show up for one selected clip. However, I just ran another test with V7 and selected all media clips (6 of them) and was able to click and drag, use Clip>Insert, or the comma shortcut. They all inserted the selected clips to the timeline.

In PrEl 3 you were able to drag a folder of clips to the timeline. Is this still an option in v10?

Just got home from work and am trying the comma key.
I clicked edit then select all and then the comma key.
Everything went to the time line. Beautiful.

That's a first for me using the comma key.
Bob. Thank you.
Everyone thank you for your help. :-D

Great to hear! Sure does make me wonder why the other methods don't work. :(

When I select all then try to drag and drop only the shaded clips that were visible in media panel would drag.
The clips that I had to scroll down to see (even though they were shaded) would not drag and drop. :-k but the insert or comma worked great. :-D
Thanks
Richard

Not from the media panel Richard, open windows explorer and just drag the entire folder to the media panel in premiere elements. Don't use the Get Media option at all ;) Just drag and drop directly from windows :)

It's worked in all versions from the beginning, here is a tutorial - "tu-Drag and Drop Media"
