Transferring PRE9 projects to PRE10

Postby kenskopp » Wed Aug 15, 2012 9:20 am

I have 13 DVD projects in PRE9. Each project includes photo slide shows I made with Photoshop Elements 9 with audio tracks from my computer files. The video portion was made with videos from my Nikon D3100 DSLR. Steve says you shouldn't open a PRE9 project with PRE10. It is recommended to export it fron PRE9 to my computer as an AVI file and then import that into PRE10. My question is can the whole project including slideshows, videos and DVD menus be saved as on AVI. I am a new member.

Thanks

It certainly can, Tank. (And welcome to Muvipix, by the way!)

Have you tried the DSLR project settings I suggested in my e-mail? Your biggest challenge is going to be setting the project up to accommodate your video. The photos will slip into a project using pretty much any settings.

When you say you have 13 DVD slideshow projects -- are you saying that you now want to combine their footage into one big DVD project? I'm not quite clear what you're asking for.

And, of course, per the book, make sure your photos are not larger than 1000x750 pixels for best results and performance!

Hi Tank, A warm welcome to Muvipix from me also :meet:

We normally recommend completing your projects in the version that they are started in, solves a lot of problems that way.
You can open a version 9 project file in version 10, just make a copy of the *.prel file before you start as you will not be able to open that file in version 9 again if you have issues. Make a copy and name if "projectname_version10.prel" and use that to open in version 10, that way you always have the original project file that will still open in version 9 ;)

I think there is some confusion here.

An AVI file can contain only audio and video, not menus or any other information relating to the editing process. If you export your video project to an AVI file, you will have a copy of the final video as edited. You can play it, but it will not contain navigable menus. You could, of course, import that AVI file into a new project and use it there -- the same as any other footage.

We recommend that you complete your project in the same version of Premiere Elements that it was started. If you open a project that was created in a previous version, Premiere Elements will attempt to convert the project file to the current version. Generally, Premiere Elements does a good job of that. However, there may be differences between versions that can't be converted. For example, plugins may have changed or have been dropped between versions, or features may be removed or work differently. It's also possible that the old project file may contain corrupted data that may prevent conversion.

Welcome Tankdriver! :wcm:

Bob, I got the same impression myself (that there was some confusion). Nice job sorting it out.

Thank you for the information. I want the 13 projects to be separate projects. I will try making copy and have PRE10 open the copy. If I have problems, I will just remake the DVD projects with PRE10. Did not know converting to AVI file would eliminate menus, thanks. Tankdriver48.
