can't delete gap & ripple after deleting clips

Postby Stacey » Wed Apr 18, 2012 11:02 am

Hello! I need to delete gaps from removed clips and ripple left to fill in. I read in the PE 10 book (p 229) about clips sliding to left after deleting- unless there is a clip filling the gap on a parallel track, which I have. See pic. So how to I override that??? I need to sync my audio and video by getting rid of these spaces. I'm sure there's a very simple solution, but at this moment I can't find it! Thanx.

Hi Stacey,
Probably the best way is to lasso all of the clips on the video track and slide them over manually.
You could also move the audio clips out of the way, move them all to the far right, then the close gap option will work.
Then you would move the audio clips back again.

This is one thing I wish they would fix in Premiere Elements, gets very frustrating at times.

Instead of just a "delete," there is a "delete and close gap" command on a pop-up menu, when you right-click a clip, that will take care of that situation. You could also select the clip and press the backspace key.

Oh, and if you right-click in the gap, you should get a pop-up to "delete and close gap."

Not if there is another clip above or below the gap unfortunately :(
If there is a clip(s) above or below, the option will be grayed out.

Chuck, I set up my timeline like in the picture. I was able to remove the gap.

I don't know that you would be able to do that 4 out of 5 times ;)
I'll have to check it out, don't remember it working even in version 10...

If I move the above titles and the below music track out of the way, then I can "delete and close gap"

Thank you so much for the help. Chuck, I shuffled things around like you said and was able to delete all the gaps and make it work. Had a tiny shortage of audio, but it was small enough I was able to just extend it to fill in, and since it was at the end of the clip which was fading out it worked well. I also had the greyed out delete and close gap that was unusable until I shifted the clips around. I would never be able to get this first project of mine done without the help at this site and the book. Thanks a million! ..Stacey

Glad to hear it is all working out Stacey :)

Now I want to know why it works for RJ but not for us...

And I'll tell you why. I missed a cut in the audio.

Ahhh, now that makes sense.

So you can't actually make it work then?

Hmmm...

I just did a test, using a sample Instant Movie. After breaking the movie apart, I deleted one of the clips by selecting it and hitting the delete button. I don't get a gap, all the remaining clips just ripple automatically to the left. Do I miss something  :-k
