Specific to Premiere Elements Version 10.
by Chris Stross » Wed Jan 18, 2012 1:05 am
I have been down this road several times. However here is the latest incarnation of two problems.
Situation 1. My own Dell Desktop, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, 8Gb RAM , Intel i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4Ghz This setup does not see the camera, not in Adobe Premiere Elements 10, not in HDV Split. In Microsoft Windows Live Moviemaker it starts the camera running but doesn't capture anything. Control Panel tells me it's there, and running properly.
Situation 2 My wife's retired Dell Vostro laptop, Windows Vista Business, 32 bit, 3 Gb RAM, Intel 2 Duo TX7500 @ 2.20GHz. In this setup, both Adobe Premiere Elements 8 and Adobe Premiere Elements 10 sees the camera, captures the video, but fails to split the clips. HDV Split functions correctly, captures video and splits clips.
Many late night hours on the 'phone to Microsoft and Sony resulted in the inevitable outcome: mutual fingerpointing.
So, now, I am left with capturing to an external La Cie Raid 0 drive on the laptop and then moving said drive to my 27" + 21 "screen desktop. Yes it works, but for heaven's sake what is going on to make me go through these contortions?
In England John Doe is referred to as the man on the top of the Clapham Omnibus. Here I tend to think of a little old lady trying to extract an object from modern plastic packaging. I have been making my living with computers since they were a basement full of tubes (valves in English). I did hope things would actually get better. How is the average Joe supposed to negotiate his or her way round this kind idiocy?
Any suggestions will be most gratefully recieved,
Chris Stross

Hi Chris. Sorry that I can't help but your frustration comes through very clearly in your posting. Hopefully someone else will come along shortly with help and suggestions for you. As an aside (which might be a start point) my system (Win 7 Pro 64 bit) began losing USB ports. Like you, I had to use a different PC to get data from (for example) a USB drive then copy it across to my PC. I eventually found a solution which was a repair install of Windows. That may or may not be relevant to your problem but it ceratinly sorted mine out. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/34 ... stall.html

On your Windows 7 64-bit machine, try swapping in the legacy drivers for your FireWire and see if it makes a difference:
* Click Windows Start orb; type "device manager" into the Search box and select Device Manager (or launch Device Manager anyway you like) * Swivel open the "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" item * Right-click on your listed 1394 controller; select "Update Driver Software" * Click the "Browse my computer for driver software" button, followed by the "Let me pick from a list" button * Select the option that has "(Legacy)" at the end of the name; click Next and let the driver be installed * Close out of dialogs and retry capture

Thanks for the quick response.
I did as you suggested. PRE didn't see the camera
HdvSplit saw the camera but stopped quickly with the following message: Capturing has been started INFO: No more data is received from camcoder. Capture stopped. End of capturing The preview screen stayed black throughout

Next piece of research.
I changed over to a Texas Instruments card and the latest driver. PRE didn't see the camera. HDVSplit captured and split succesfully.
I have more things to try.
Go to the legacy driver on the TI card.
Try all this all over with Cyberlink Ultra.
It shouldn't be this hard. Not after these things have been around for so long.

Sorry for an idiot question, Chris, and just to clarify; you are trying to capture via a firewire card, correct?

Next Update, then I'm going to bed!
Cyberlink Ultra v10 Sees camera, captures video, splits clips.
I suggest that puts this problem squarely on Adobe's doorstep.

Mr McDonald
Yes. The TI card in question is an 800 not 400 Firewire card. This camera can only capture over firewire.
The man on the top of the Clapham omnibus rests his case.

Thanks Chris. Just wanted to clarify. Some folk have tried using video capture cards (e.g. Pinnacle) and they definitely don't work.

Love MP Sketches. Now about your avatar. Does "Che" have some impact on your life? Had a chance to visit his memorial back in Jan of this year. Very Interesting fellow.

No. I just change my avatar from time to time. In the past it has been a picture of one or other of my Siberian Huskies. And Che was a 1960s icon - so just a reminder of my misspent youth. Just like Bill Clinton, I didn't inhale! Kleio avatar.jpg Datsha avatar.jpg
