PRE 10 annoyances

PRE 10 annoyances

Postby mfl1 » Tue Jan 17, 2012 6:54 pm

I'm having the following relatively minor issues, some of which I suspect are related:

1. When I open the program and try to open a recent project, none appears, although I have a recent project on which I've been working. I have to locate it each time in the Windows file structure.
2. Similarly, whenever I open the program, it asks whether I want to download additional content from the internet, despite my clicking "no" and "don't ask me again" each previous time.
3. I'm not sure this has any particular significance, but the program asks me to sign in with my Adobe password; I do; and it still asks me to sign in.

And one additional annoyance that is presumably unrelated to these:

In the media view (list view), there are a number of columns. I know how to delete or add some of the existing columns (using "edit columns"). The Adobe instructions, however, say I can add one of my own making by clicking "add." There is no place to click "add." Additionally, the Adobe instructions say that the "Client" column can be used for entering a client's name. (I'm happy to use that column for the comments that I would have added in a column I intended to call something else.) But there is no way to enter text. (The Adobe instructions, by the way, are on a web page headed "Viewing clip properties.")

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I'm not sure how much we can help you, Marvin. Most of those sound like Adobe issues.

Although it might help to know your computer specs, operating system, how fast your processor is, how much RAM you have, how much free, clean, defragmented space is on your C or main drive and if you are editing to your C or main drive or to a second or external drive.

Yours are not typical annoyances by any means. So it's quite possible there's something going on with your system rather than the program.

I've never heard that you can add your own custom column to the Media panel. It's certainly nothing we say in our books, and there's no way to do it that I know of.

Thanks, Steve. This is a 2-day old Lenovo W520, running Windows 7, with an Intel 2.2 GHz i7-2720QM CPU and 8 GB RAM, 323 GB free on the C drive, to which I'm editing.

By the way, any thoughts on my fourth issue, which seems like it's a program question?

Many thanks for your help.

As for the nag screen that keeps asking you to download additional content, after you check the option to Do Not Show again, have you tried going to Premiere Elements' Edit/Preferences/General and making sure the Show All Do Not Show Messages option is unchecked?

You've got some very strange bugs going on on that computer of yours.

If it's a Windows machine, have you tried running Advanced System Care Free on it? It can often fix crazy Windows behaviors as well as tune up your computer with a single click.

Even brand-new computers can be riddled with junk and temp files and even spyware.

Yep, the box is unchecked. I'll see what I can do with the computer. Thanks. (Any idea about my question about adding a column, or typing in one of the existing ones? That doesn't seem like a computer issue.)

Yep. I replied to that in my first reply.

It's never been a feature that I know of. You'll have to confront Adobe about that one. Sorry.

You could add custom columns (text or boolean) in early versions of Premiere Elements, such as in version 2, but in later versions a lot of features have been removed. In version 10, you can't add custom columns.

I use a Lenovo W520 and don't have any of the issues you are having with version 10. Might suggest that you uninstall and then install the program again. Not sure if that will make a difference but it can't hurt.

As Steve thought, it turned out that the problems I was having that were the subject of my original post were Windows problems. I eventually had to exchange the new computer for another one, and PRE has been working fine ever since. Thanks to all for your help.
