V10 Comes Through Again

V10 Comes Through Again

Postby Chuck Engels » Wed Nov 02, 2011 10:31 am

I am really liking this version of Premiere Elements :)

My current project is in Premiere Pro CS3, HDV from Canon cameras.
It was a two camera shoot for a infomercial, they reused the tapes way too many times and one of the tapes was not usable, the one with the close ups of the people being interviewed.

In order to cut this video properly I really needed that second shot. There is a trick were you can import larger size video 1440 x 1080, into a smaller project 1280 x 720, so you can zoom in without losing quality and make it appear as a second camera/shot.

I could not get Pro CS3 to do a good job when putting the HDV clips into a 720p project. I am pretty sure that in CS5.5 you can even have different formats and sizes in sequences now, that sure would have helped here. Anyway, no matter what I tried the video quality was not good, in comes Premiere Elements 10 :)

Exported HDTV High Quality 1440 x 1080 from Adobe Media Encoder/Premiere Pro and imported those files into a Premiere Elements 10 AVCHD 720p 30 project. Everything came out perfect !! I was able to do my zooms (which I had to make the cuts again but that was a small inconvenience) then export multiple formats for delivery.

Premiere Elements 10 can really handle a lot of what has now become "real world" circumstances in video editing. There are so many formats now and a need to combine them into single projects, then export them to many more formats for Blu Ray, Web, DVD, iPad, Facebook, Youtube, and more !!

Premiere Elements 10 has yet to let me down in any area :TU:

I do get an occasional crash, just like with any editor I have used, they are not very common but I do still save often and have the Auto Save turned on (saves a copy every 4 minutes).

That's great news, Chuck!

I too am finding it the nicest build in years. I love how quickly it opens projects!

It runs just great on my Pentium 4/XP. And I love it on my iMac. (Although, for some reason, it works better on my Mac with DV-AVIs than it does with DV-MOVs!)

Though I think I'm going to run it on my Windows 7 64bit. It gives me the best bang for the buck and the best all-around performance.

Yes, you are are correct about CS5/5.5 and support for different formats in the same sequence. I'm curious. Did you try putting the HDV clips into a separate sequence that matched the HDV properties and then nest that sequence into your 720p sequence. I never had CS3, but I understand that was how you would do it with versions prior to CS5.

Sorry to say I did not try that Bob, never had to do this before and wasn't familiar with the process.
Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time. If Premiere Elements wouldn't have worked then my next step would have been to come to the fine folks at Muvipix.com for help. Somehow I knew you would have the answer :)

Hopefully I won't ever have to do this again, but if I do will try the nested sequence first.
Thanks for the great info Bob :hat:

Now to make sure I understand what you are saying...

I created a HDV project, 1080i 30, for the video and created multiple sequences and one of those is the master where I did the final edits and put everything together.

Then I created a new 720p project, copied the timeline from the HDV project and pasted that into the 720p project timeline. That did not work well at all. What would I need to do to nest the sequence from the HDV project into the sequence in the 720p project?

I was talking about creating a new sequence in the same project. File > New > Sequence. You'll get a new sequence in the project panel and a corresponding tab in the timeline panel. Once you add media to the second sequence, you can select the first sequence and add the second sequence to it just like you would with any other clip.

I'm not sure how well this will work in CS3. That version still associated the video format attributes with the project. I think CS4 moved those attributes from the project to the sequence and you can have multiple sequences each with different video attributes in the same project. I have CS5 and that's definitely the case for it. CS5 also improved the support for multiple formats in the same sequence.

You are correct, I cannot change the attributes for the sequences only the projects.
That's why I really want to upgrade to CS5.5 and will before the end of the year.
Would have been nice for this project however.

Adobe has switched from a roughly 18 month release cycle to a 24 month release cycle with a mid-cycle (x.5) release at about the 12 month point. The first mid-cycle release, CS5.5, came out in May of this year, so CS 6.0 would be expected around May 2012. About 6 months from now.

One other thing to consider, Chuck. Adobe is having a 20% discount through Dec. 31 on upgrades to CS5.5 from versions prior to CS5. See the 1st offer on this link for details: http://www.adobe.com/special/offers.html

Don't they usually make that offer a couple of months before the new versions come out?

Unfortunately there isn't a discount on Premiere Pro CS5.5 from CS3, just the standard upgrade price.
The 20% applies if you are upgrading from CS5 or if you are upgrading to a suite. Thanks for the heads up though Bob.
