Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Suite 12

Postby BuddyB » Sat Jan 18, 2014 8:50 pm

Looking for an opinion. Is it that much improved over Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Suite 10? I see it on eBay at a decent price. Thanks.

Well, it's a 64-bit program, so it performs better on a 64-bit operating system with a good RAM load. Especially when you're editing hi-def.

But, beyond that, not a lot of new features.

Although 64-bit operation is a nice upgrade!

Sony's upgrade policy is usually pretty competitive. On the release of a new version (as has just happened) Sony usually send out special offers by email. It's worth checking the mail that you registered under you could get version 13 with hitfilm, some borisfx and a few other bits for a bargain. You might be able pick the current version up for around $60.

Worth noting that there are three different packages of Sony Movie Studio 13 available. The add-ons Chris B mentions are in the 13 Suite version. The FXHome/HitFilm add-on is not the HitFilm Express 2 which is included in Movie Studio 12 Visual Effects Suite, it's 7 visual effects plug-ins from the HitFilm collection. The 2 Boris videoFX units are very powerful, if/when you learn to use them :) Tutorials seem to be available on the Boris site though.

One of the new features is the option to right-click the clips in the Project Media window and choose Create Video Proxy (for high-definition editing) from the shortcut menu. The UI has been revamped quite a bit, but most of the old features are still there (somewhere). And don't be put-off by the new larger icons. If you have a large screen, they'll be a pleasure when you get used to them.

Movie Studio Platinum 12 and 13 are both available as 32-bit and 64-bit. You can have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed at the same time. It comes in useful with older NewBlueFX from MSP 10 Suite, because when using the 64-bit version of Movie Studio Platinum, third-party plug-ins will work only if they are 64-bit plug-ins. You can share projects between 32- and 64-bit versions, if you edit as needed in 32-bit Movie Studio Platinum and finish the project in 64-bit Movie Studio Platinum. You can use newer versions without uninstalling the older one(s).

And I agree that the current email upgrade offer is a bargain. It's valid until February 28, 2014 only when purchasing directly from Sony Creative Software via links in the email, so you need to see your preferences in your My Account on the SCS site, if you did not receive the offer.

I just got my email offer this AM. Thanks everybody for the input. The new premium version is not a whole lot more expensive than the older version. Will go with that.

I almost picked up an Adobe Premier 5 at a decent price, but hesitated too long. I can't afford the real thing, so I'm leaning toward the Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13 Suite. I've enjoyed my 10.0 what little time I've had to devote to it, and I'm hoping 2014 will give me more time to get into everything I want to do. I sure do appreciate you all (yawl).

Thanks for then tip off ;) . Buddy, I don't think you'll be disappointed from what I've seen so far of MS Plat 13 .... I've been working a bit doing some real things, and I'm very pleased.

Its not difficult to clear some extra space for working, and I am noticing an immediate improvement in the speed it all operates at - in particular when working in open Media Generator or Media FX panels, making adjustments now flows very smoothly. For example, (and this is on the same Win 7 64bit machine) in MS Plat 11, when moving the Location of titles around (on the Location section in the Media Generator panel) there was a lag, and some jerky movement of the text before it ended up where I wanted it - this often caused innacurate or repeated placing as I kept having to fine tune it. Now with MS Plat 13 it all works smoothly and text items move an flow around the screen with no jumps or time lags. Much better and quicker.

I wonder if people think this is down to the 64bit working, or just internal programming improvements in the software?

mcgregni, your comments about moving the titles around make me want to download version 13. (I have had similar problems with titles) Guess I will bite the bullet and download it today.

I think it's a bit of both!

FYI, NewBlue tells that their FX/TitlerEx bundle contains "the exact same effects and transitions as well as TitlerEx"
in MSP 12 Platinum Suite and MSP 13 Suite.

Girls & Guys, I would get downloading - I'm in Movie Studio paradise here tonight :yh: I'm mixing together an intro sequence consisting of 5 video tracks (1text, 3 with photos using track motions, plus an underlying background texture) - all of these tracks involve continuous motion changes with 3 photos on screen at once moving, the text moving across the bottom and scaling, and the background texture 3 different gradual property adjustments using keyframes - all these simulataneous dynamic effects going on together - and it is amazingly smooth to preview and work on, and what an improvement!

For example, previously in Plat 11, when scrubbing around over 5 dynamic events like this, the movement would have been stuttering and jumpy, with a photo (say) sticking in its position and then jumping suddenly catching up. Now, in Plat 13, scrubbing back and forth with all this motion produces an almost seamless previewing, both forwards & backwards. This is not just more pretty - is has a significant practical effe ct of streamlining the whole fine-tuning process, making it quicker to suddenly stop and make a small keyframe adjustment for example and then instantly check you've got it right. Its all so much more efficient.

This is on the same machine remember - a Win 7 64 bit, with AMD A10 & 8gb Ram. And I'm definately now living more happily with the 'cosmetic' changes I flagged up earlier - nothings a real issue.

As a side note to all this I've ordered the 13 suite. I ordered the packaged version; like to have the disc when necessary. I get the feeling it would be better to unload 10 before the install of 13. Any thoughts on that? Plus I have a gent coming soon and I will complete his project in 10 just in case there are any new procedures I need to learn with the new app..thoughts on that appreciated as well. 2014 is gonna' be a good'un! :)
