Panasonic AVCHD Camera Files

Postby bbrener » Sat Dec 21, 2013 2:32 pm

I am a newbie but have made a couple of basic movies and also bought the Guide.
I have a question on the files created by my Panasonic Camcorder which is AVCHD format.
The files I imported for my projects are the MTS files in the Stream directory. Are those the only relevant files for Movie Studio. I am assuming so.
There are SFK files in the same directory. Also CPI files in the Clipinf directory and MPL files in the playlist directory. There is also a PANA_EXT directory with backup files and a Avchdtn directory. I assume all those extraneous files are used by the editing software provided by Panasonic (HD Writer).
Is that a correct assumption and the only files needed are the MTS files?

Usually the MTS files are the only ones that you will need - Are you having a problem with Vegas accepting those?

No. No issue. Just double checking.
Thanks

.SFK files might be "peek" files for Studio - although if they are not there Vegas will regenerate them.

"CPI files contain metadata that describes the video clip, such as the video's frame rate, aspect ratio and other video information."
"A file with the MPL file extension is an AVCHD Playlist file. It's just a reference to the actual videos, which are probably the MTS files you should also see."

My Canon produces the SFK files too, but all I need are the MTS. I've gotten in the habit of just deleting the SFKs and have never missed them.

BTW, if you use Movie Studio's Device Manager to get the video from your camcorder to your computer, it will gather only the video files you need and leave the extra stuff behind.

Correct about the .sfk files being sound peak information. Sony's Sound Forge audio editor creates them also. If you keep the files there, the loading time of your project within Vegas will be nearly instantaneous, whereas if they're absent, your software will have to spend time regenerating them, as mentioned above.
