New to Movie Studio

Postby JerryNailsworth » Tue Sep 24, 2013 11:49 am

Hi, I'm new to Movie Studio and to video editing in general. I discovered a version of Movie Studio HD Platinum which I think is version 10. I am using this on mu new computer that I bought for video editing. It is Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-3770 (3.4GHz) 8MB Cache, with 16 GB Ram and a 1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 650 - DVI, mHDMI, VGA - 3D Vision Ready. I noticed that there is a new version 12 out. Would there be any benefit in me buying the latest version?
I am currently editing my first movie at the age of 63 so please bear with me if my future questions seem very basic. Is there an area that would be better suited for beginners?

On our product page, you'll find a link to my review of the new features in version 12.

And, along the left side of the page, you'll find our 8 part Basic Training tutorial series, which will apply to both versions 10 and 12. You'll also find tutorials for all versions of Movie Studio among our products here at Muvipix. And, if you want to know step by step how to use pretty much every tool in the program, you might want to check out our Muvipix Guide!

As Steve says in his review, you'll get improved performance with the 64-bit version of MSP 12.
That alone is reason enough to upgrade, especially as you seem to have the resources in your set-up. I assume your OS is 64-bit as well.

Remember that you can have v10, v12 32-bit and 64-bit at the same time, as they are separate installations. You don't need to uninstall old versions and free updates/builds to the current version can be installed over the existing build.

60+ is as good an age as any to start editing video. ( I know :-D ).

Welcome Jerry,
I'd second Steve's suggestion to obtain The Muvipix.com Guide to Sony Movie Studio. It's well written and easy to understand for the beginner. If anything needs to be clarified your questions are welcome here. There are many helpful folks to guide you past the difficulties and on to the next level in video creation.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I have taken your advice and bought the book, (excellent I must say, well worth it) and updated to Movie Studio 12. However it won't load. It stalls at "creating file i/o manager". I tried downloading the latest version (build 1183) but it makes no difference. I have a brand new computer windows 8 with 16 mb ram and an nvidea graphics card. Movie studio 10 worked fine but I want to take advantage of the 64 bit version. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions as I'm stuck.

Have you tried to go into your Windows Task Manager > Processes tab,
Locate and End "File I/O surrogate" and "Movie Studio"? Then open Movie Studio?

Otherwise, please tell us more about your operating system.

I have Movie Studio running just fine on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 8.

Meantime, by all means go to the nVidia or ATI web site and download the latest driver for your graphics card. You'll be amazed how often this solves this problem!

Thanks Steve for the reply. I have an Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-3770 (3.4GHz) 8MB Cache, with 16 GB Ram and a 1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 650. All my other software works fine. I ran the updater for the video card and it said it was up to date. I also tried vkmast's suggestion to end File I/O surrogate" and "Movie Studio"? Then open Movie Studio? This didn't work either.
Do you have any more suggestions?

Hmm, still don't know what operating system you're using.

But no matter. I think you may need to contact Sony Tech Support. There's likely something going on with your system on a level deeper than we can dig into on this forum.

Meantime, here's one last idea, per Google. It might be worth a shot.

Once you're up and running, though, we've got lots of great tutorials to help get you going with the program.

Steve's link seems basically the same as in my post and that did not work for you.
What's your version of Quicktime? I use v. 7.6.9. without problems in MSP 12 (32 or 64, Win7 though). It's usually suggested that one should use the latest version, but there are reports of problems with some of the late versions.
I've seen someone reporting that using the free Malwarebytes program found "nasties" and after deleting them and a relaunch the program worked.

I had a problem with Vegas Pro (not the same but similar) not opening when I updated to V12. I tracked the issue down to having a driver for an AMD card and Nvidia card installed - and the program tried to initiate the AMD driver that didn't work. You could check that you don't have too many (or multiple?) graphics drivers installed. Worth looking at.

Thanks soooooooh much to vkmast. I removed my version of quicktime, (the latest) and installed 7.6.9 and hey presto it worked. Brilliant. Now I can start editing in 64 bit. Why do these things happen? I must let quicktime know.
Many thanks again. This forum is briilliant.
