Blue ray to DVD on trial version DVD architect

Postby BryanK » Wed Dec 28, 2011 12:45 pm

I downloaded a trial version of DVD Architect. One of the things that interested me was burning short Blue ray quality clips onto a DVD disk. When I looked at the tutorial it states that you set the target for 4.7 GB for DVD. On the trial version I have, it only gives a 25 gb or 50 gb options. I cannot get the file to burn using this option. Is this due to the trail version or am I doing something else wrong.
Thanks,
BryanK

It depends on where you're looking, Bryan! ;)

As I show you in my book, you must go to the File menu and select Properties. On the Properties panel, set up your output as BluRay and then set your Target as 4.7 gig DVD.

Note that, although this produces a DVD, you can only play it on a BluRay player, of course. You can't play any BluRay video on a DVD player, no matter what kind of disc it's on.

And, hey, Welcome to Muvipix!

When I go to the project properties / Target media size, and click on the drop down menu the only options are 25.00 and 50.00. I don't have the 4.7 or 8.5 that was shown on the tutorial.
Thanks for the quick reply.

What is your Target set to? There should be an option for DVD.

I have no options other that 25 GB or 50 GB. I was wondering if its because I have the trial version. Sorry I misspelled the Subject line on this post.

Well, I'm embarrassed to say that I can't even make it work myself! Even trying the method I recommended in my book!

How embarrassing!

I haven't figured if something changed without my knowing it or if I was just badly mistaken when I thought I got it working before. But I definitely do need to rethink this. Or research it and find out where I got the idea you could do it.

Sorry.

Could Sony have taken that feature away. Too many people putting AVCHD stuff on DVD's? Lots of comments about that feature taken out of the latest build of Sony Movie Studio on movie studio forum.

It's hard to say.

Version 5 is the first version to output BluRay video, so it clearly didn't exist in version 4.5.

Again, sorry for the misinformation. You can still, of course, burn BluRay files onto a DVD from DVD Architect Studio. You just have to manually ensure the files don't exceed 4.5-4.7 gig of space (about 20 minutes of video).

Steve,
it seems that DVDA Studio 5.0 build 128 is the last build to allow Blu-ray to DVD disc. When I updated VMS 11 b220 to b283, the BD to DVD from the timeline was also not an option any more. My work-around at the moment is Tools > Burn disc > Blu-ray disc and Render image only, then burn the .iso with ImgBurn to DVD. Like TreeTopsRanch says, there are comments on SCS VMS forum about this and some posters see it as a marketing decision made by Sony for the VMS11/DVD Architect bundled product line.
I think this is somewhat confirmed by the following recent update in SCS KB:
Burning AVCHD content to disc

How can I burn AVCHD footage to disc in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum or in Vegas Pro?

Our software actually burns Blu-ray Disc content to Blu-ray media, as opposed to burning an AVCHD disc as some software products do.

Thanks for that info, vk! At least now I know I wasn't crazy!

Though it's a shame they removed such a useful feature.

Yes, it is a shame we have to use other software to create a DVD with AVCHD content. I use DVD with AVCHD content for short videos that don't require the expensive Blue-ray disks. I then play them on my blue ray player and they look stunning. Much cheaper than buying Blue-ray disks.

I suspect since SONY has most of the Blue-ray production patents they want you to buy Blue-ray disks.

Hi Gents. First time here. I note this thread re: Burning AVCHD to DVD's. This is exactly what I want to do BUT at 720p. I've got PRE10 which has DVD burning presets for 1920*1080 and 1440*1080 but none for 1280*720. I have 8 segments of video each around 10-15mins. I was hoping to get 2 or 3 of these with menus onto a few DVD's given my friends don't have Blu Ray players. I have outputted each video as AVCHD mp4 HD 720p50 (H264) computer files and thought I could use DVD Architect to build menu's and burn to DVDs. But as per this thread the capability to burn an AVCHD DVD disk isn't supported anymore. Can you suggest another approach? If I burn at 720*576 I can fit all videos onto a single DVD, but the quality is poor relative to the original images and video. Cheers from Downunder; Steve P. PS. Great forum and terrific service :)

DVD players play standard definition video.

BluRay players play hi-def (1920x1080) video.

That's the standard. There is no DVD or BluRay standard that I know of that is 1280x720.

You can create a file at that size, I guess, to play on your computer. But you're not going to be able to create a disc with menus that you can play on your TV at that size.

Just want to point out that there is a 1280x720p BD standard. The frame rates are 59.94p, 50p, 24p, 23.976p.

See page 14: http://www.blu-raydisc.com/assets/Downl ... 110712.pdf

AVCHD (TM) does have a 1280x720 format: http://www.avchd-info.org/format/index.html

Great information direct from the BDA on http://www.blu-raydisc.com
