Bee Video

Postby beekalmer » Tue Aug 16, 2011 6:55 am

Hello All,

When I first became a member earlier this year I promised I would let you know if I ever created a viral video. Being A crazy cat lady type I was hoping it would be my talking cat series but no, it is a video I did last Friday night about our bees. I posted it on YouTube Friday night and it now has over 20k views. Viral is a relative term but that is the most views I have ever got in a weekend.
BTW This was filmed with a Sony Handycam HDR-CX110. I was trying out the Slow Motion feature. As you can see the auto focus does a hell of a job. I got this camera on Amazon in a "Like New" open box sale from the Amazon Clearance Center. After I applied my CC rewards the camera cost me $10. Not bad.

Hope you enjoy it!

This is amazing work, MaryAnne! Very professionally done -- and the images are rich and clear!

How close did you get to the bees, by the way? The focus is perfect!

As good as anything I've seen done professionally. Great job! What's the slo-mo speed compared to normal? Even in slo-mo they move pretty fast.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Considering this is a sub $400 dollar camera, it is pretty amazing.

Question: How close did you get to the bees, by the way? The focus is perfect!
Answer: All auto focus thank God I couldn't hit a barn with a Mac Truck otherwise.

I was only several feet away and of course I was using a tripod. Bee's contrary to popular opinion are very docile so as long as you don't really annoy them or look like a Bear they will not bother you. Beekeepers wear white suits so they don’t look like bears.

Question: As good as anything I've seen done professionally. Great job! What's the slo-mo speed compared to normal? Even in slo-mo they move pretty fast.
Answer: The Smooth Slow Record mode increases the record rate from 60 frames per second (fps) to 240 fps, allowing you to capture 3 seconds of fast motion and play the video back in 12 seconds. I just kept doing it over and over. I had about 14 minutes and edited it down to just under one. There are some full speed moments but most of the middle is at the slower capture rate.

Hey guys all I did is push the record button. I will tell you this, you would never have seen the bees flying in and out the way you did without this feature. Things that you are taking for granted while you are watching would not have been so dramatic otherwise. Love this camera!

BTW this is just a bird bath on the back porch that we put out for the bees so they can easily perch and drink. The Hives are about 20 feet away.

My thanks to Steve. I have watched his Premiere Elements training videos over and over and I have the book. Couldn’t have done it without you Steve!

Ha at 32 seconds look in the background to see a bee drowning or trying to do the backstroke.

Haha...I didn't even notice that. I saw it several times but was always looking at the foreground. I love the shot starting at 38 seconds where the bee takes off and flies away. It looks like a helicopter taking off. The shots of bees flying all have a strange look to them like the bee is just an inanimate object suspended from rotating blades. They look more like cargo than a living creature.

Very good choice of background music. Very well shot and put together. =D> You said all that you did was push the button - but before that you had to have the idea, the set up....
