export settings for Quicktime for web sharing

Postby mrenier » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:38 pm

A couple of years ago, there was an internet post by a guy named John Cloudman about export settings for high-quality videos for web sharing. I noticed that in Premiere Elements 9.0, or in the updated version of QuickTime, there are a couple of new parameters that I don't know what to do with. Specifically, the following 4 parameters:

1) Field Order: the recommendation was to set it at "none," however, that is not an option. Options are: Progressive, Lower first, or Upper First

2) Then, there is a checkmark box for "Render at maximum depth." Not sure what to do there

3) Advanced Settings, there is a checkmark box for each of the following:

Key frame every _______frames

Optimize stills

Frame reordering

4) Bitrate Settings: There is a checkmark next to this item. If you check it, you can fill in a number

Limit data rate to ________ Kbps

Any suggestions?

Specifically, John's recommendations were for getting the best quality image on YouTube.

Here were John's specs:

From the Share tab, choose Computer and then QuickTime/MOV. Choose the Cable Modem, DSL preset and then click the Advanced button.

From the settings window, do the following:

Video Tab
*Video Codec: H.264
*Quality: 100
*Frame Wdith: 1280
*Frame Height: 720
*Frame Rate: 29.97
*Field Order: None
*Pixel Aspect Ratio: square
*Set Bitrate: checked
*Bitrate: 8000 kbps

Audio Tab
*Audio Code: AAC
*Output Channels: Stereo
*Frequency: 44kHz

Can anybody help mrenier fill in his blanks?

This was discussed recently. Read all 4 pages of this link. My Vimeo settings screen shots are on page 2, but read all 4 pages. Ted figured out the best settings for YouTube.

As for the keyframes. Full video has I frames (keyframes) every frame. When you compress video the I frames (keyframes) are set every 15 or 30 frames and frames with lesser info are drawn in between. I have seen it recommended to set keyframes every 15, but I have used 15 and 30 and saw no major difference. Run a few tests by exporting a 30 second section and see how it looks to you.
