cc Kaleida similar in PS?

Postby momoffduty » Tue Mar 08, 2011 4:36 pm

AE has a plugin cc Kaleida to generate images. I would like to make something like this in PS. Any ideas on how to accomplish this effect in PS? Thanks.

Not quite sure what you are trying to do here, Cheryl.

You can capture frame shots from AE to use as stills or is that far too simplistic for what you want to achieve?

Here's a free 32-bit plugin for Photoshop. http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/kaleidoscope.htm

It should work in PS CS5 32-bit version.

If you installed PixelBender and the Photoshop Pixelbender plugin, there is a kaleidoscope filter included in the Pixel Bender Gallery. Works, but no documention.

John, capturing frames from AE is a great idea! I'm more comfortable in AE than PS.

Bob, thanks for the link! Where do I install? Totally lost.

I have 2 uses. One is to make backgrounds in PS for 3D AE projects, the 3000x3000 range. The other use is to make static backgrounds for my church. The latter does not need to be large since it will be a slide at SD or 800x600 and I can grab a frame from AE.

In PS try Image>Image Size and select bicubic smoother to see if the results of 'scaling up' a captured still from AE gives an acceptable outcome at 3000 x 3000.

I tried it on an 800 x 600 pic that I took from Google images and increased it to 3000 x 2250 then imported into a PPro HDV 1080i245 test project.

It looked OK on my screen but I didn't take it further (to a DVD/BD for output) so it may be that it was unacceptable in quality terms. It may be a way around for you but you will have to decide on the resultant quality.

Since you are comfortable using Kaleida in After Effects, try this:

Create a new composition. Set it to custom frame size 3000x3000 (or whatever you want) with square pixels.
Import the image you want to use (it should be at least as large as the comp for highest quality) and place it in the comp -- scale as necessary.
Apply the kaleida effect and adjust.
Save or render the frame as a photoshop psd file.

Bob, the set up would work best for me. At least in AE I can add effects to get the desired look whereas in PS would probably take me too long to get the desired look. Thanks!
