Not sure I would call them fake. Enhanced might be the better term. Although the process is new to non-linear editing with Photoshop, the process (although manually) has been around for 100 years.

Think of Indiana Jones in the big warehouse at the end. Everything except the very center was a matt that was not real but painted glass. Also movies like the Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind did too.
