video portion not playing during review

OK, I've watched the tutorials...

I've added a video clip to my timeline and as I toggle it on and off the audio is playing fine but the video portion is not. It freezes. When I toggle the pause/play button the video on the screen 'jumps' forward to where we are in the clip, but the video does not 'play' even though the audio does.

Any ideas? Thanks!! todd

What type of file and codec is your source video?

Along with Peru's question, is there a red line above the clip on the timeline?
When certain formats are not rendered they do not play well. The red line would show that the clip is not rendered for smooth playback. Pressing the enter key will render the clips below the Work Area Bar that have a red line above them.

Could also be something to do with your system performance, listing your computer specs would help too.

Well for the second time the program crashed as well... I'll see what I can do guys to get you the info that helps.

I don't know codec, I had saved them as .avi's. Thanks!! I'll reply as soon as I can.

There is a free utility called "gspot" that will tell you what codecs your avi file is using. You can get it at http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

There's an option in Project settings that causes the playback monitor to freeze. I always turn it off, otherwise there's no point in using PE8.

1. Edit > Project Settings > General

2. Click the "Project Settings" button.

3. Turn off "External Device" in the Realtime Playback frame. You don't have to turn off the "External Device" in the Export frame.

This is all in addition to fixing any codec problems there might be.
