File -> Export not working in PE8

Specific to Premiere Elements Version 8.

File -> Export not working in PE8

Postby cknittle » Sun Sep 27, 2009 10:17 am

Hello All,

I've been a longtime PE4 user. I use the File->Export option *alot* to consolidate video clips from my kid's sport events into a single .avi file.

Today I purchased PE8. The File->Export option is grey'ed out in my PE8 - as if disabled. I'm using it the same way I do it in PE4.

Any ideas from other PE8 users why this would be the case?

You mentioned that you've used version 4 for a long time, so maybe you're already aware of this. The window containing the timeline needs to be selected (clicked on) before the Export function will be available. This is true for versions previous to version 8, so I assume it's still true. If this isn't the problem, then I'm sure someone else will be along soon to offer more advice.

Thanks Dave, but this isn't the problem. Hopefully someone else will be able to help out.

Yes, it is stupid. Adobe have removed File>Export >Movie. Now File>Export is just for exporting Titles. All export is done via the Share tab now.

Well, that is more consistent...

Yes, certainly more consistent, however they could have at least changed it to File>Export Title. Not just leaving it as File>Export.

Unfortunately, this does seem to be the case. I guess they figure you can do any output you'd want from Share.

Although File/Export/Movie did include options for outputting Divx and some advanced color palettes that aren't otherwise available. So removing it is a pretty serious omission, in my not so humble opinion.

Those options are still there Steve... in the Share tab when you export to AVI, you can select the compressor, etc, etc...

I'm guessing then that:
(Old) File->Export->Movie == Microsoft AVI
(Old) File->Export->Movie with Recompress disabled (in Settings) == Uncompressed Microsoft AVI

???????

How does "DV NTSC Standard" compare to (Old) File->Export->Movie with Recompress disabled?

Also, when I export these clips to AVI I'm looking for the best quality so I can import later for an end of season highlight DVD. After that I compress to mpg. What is the best setting to use to keep the highest quality, assuming hard drive space is not an issue.

You're right, Paul! thank you!

And Curtis, the output quality at that setting should be virtually identical to the old File/Export/Movie.

Did someone actually find a "Recompress" option in Share for DV-AVI files in version 8? I can't find it. It seems that Adobe did away with smart rendering. So any work you have rendered for previews can no longer be exported except by recompressing when working with DV-AVI.

Robert, do we know for a fact that these DV-AVIs are actually being re-compressed when you output them?

When I output a DV-AVI timeline as a DV-AVI, it flies through so quickly that it's like the video data just goes through unchanged (and not re-rendered)!

It didn't fly by fast for me. I rendered a preview of a 20 minute dv-avi that I had applied stabilization to -- the line was green --, but PRE8 just rendered it again when I exported.

Well, that would be a rendered effect, Robert.

I'm talking about putting a DV-AVI onto the timeline and then, with no effects applied to it other than cuts and trims, Share it as a DV-AVI. In that case, I'm thinking there would be no re-compressing, right?

Rendered effects were smart rendered in prior versions in a standard or widescreen 720x480 project and exported to dv-avi.

I'll have to install PRE8 again to check what you describe. And yes, hopefully an unedited dv-avi on the timeline will also export to dv-avi without rendering.
