Download the latest audio drivers for your PC and see if that fixes the problem.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

OK Thanks - will try this.

Meanwhile I have dusted off another AVI creator program that I haven't used in a while. So this involves capturing footage in WinDV, exporting the AVI to another pc, editing it in another software and making sure it's still an AVI at the other end, then re-importing the edited AVI to the original pc and adding filters to it, if needs be. Then I exported the result to a web host and played it back, it looked ok - not the best, but ok

No I'm afraid it had no effect whatsoever - I didn't think it would because this system is a clean install XP so I upgraded all the drivers about a month ago. Is it possible Adobe has thrown a spanner in the works? Can't be a coincidence that PE3 has failed on two completely separate Pentium 4's?

It is a crazy scenario - I have the whole PE3 program installed and registered on this XP and I can't even open it [glum]

Thank goodness I have a plan B as above, but still rather fed up. I enjoyed using PE3 I liked the interface.

I do have QuickTime on that P4.

Have removed PE3 from the P4 clean-install XP because I don't want it clashing with WinDV which I am about to trial on this system.

Will keep the PE3 disc handy in case a fix for this glitch should arise.

Thanks,

Ric

Well some success - nothing worked to begin with but that was because the Dell Optiplex GX270 PCI card bracket had never been set up properly and needed to be taken to pieces in order to drive the feed PCI card home into it's slot. Then I was able to re-slot a firewire card to the feeder card and whamo, the pc suddenly recognised both firewire card and dv cam. Then I was able to upload a clip from my dv cam / tape, so I have a system now which can do this. WinDV creates AVI files so I can export these to another system for editing, it's just a shame I can't use Premiere Elements for editing now because I had got used to it. Maybe I can get hold of a later version than PE3 if I can find my way to a dual core, but this business of the cd-rom installation failure has me worried I must admit.

Many thanks for help here anyways :)
