is loading footage for editing into a project already opened a no-no?

No, that should have worked.

thanks - oh well, back to the drawing board: PE3 is fried.

just did a re-install, re-register, everything - soon as i open PE3 "sorry an error has occured - PE3 needs to close" and that's it.

am in a real bind, PE3 is the only software i can use to smoothly capture 8mm ciné home movies - i direct capture them through firewire, but if i can't even open the software in the first place, that's that.

just captured all the footage i've been experimenting with from the dv cam onto MovieMaker by way of RCA wiring, went without a hitch, so it isn't the cam which is muddying the waters.

looks like PE3 has corrupted on my hard drive and even re-installing won't fix it?

terrible shame if so - this was a great edit software, i've used it successfully for several years now.

my last shot would be to install a decent dvd-rom in the other XP and fresh-install PE3 onto that system, but a heck of a nuisance ... that pc is in another room, a room where i cannot capture ciné film ... it would mean hauling that pc out and swopping with the one now not able to run PE3

any clues yet as to what caused this meltdown please so i can avoid it in the future? 8-[

thanks,

R

Maybe it's just time to upgrade, version 7 or 9 are very good.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks Chuck - when you say upgrade, can you do that through PE3 or must you purchase an entirely new dvd-rom please?

Well there really has never been an upgrade, each version has been a separate stand alone program.
Even if you could find version 4 on eBay it would be a good deal. The program changed quite a bit from version 3 to 4 but it still works the same.

Have you ever thought of completely wiping your hard drive clean and installing everything over again?
It's a lot of work but it would probably solve your problem.

On a Pentium 4? Hmmmm....or maybe not.

PrEl doesn't just "fry." Either something has changed on the system that's keeping it from running, or the uninstall isn't completely removing everything so that you get a clean reinstall. Does anyone know if there's a removal tool or specific procedure from Adobe? I'd be tempted to try a system restore to a date prior to the problems.

hmm,

i'm minded to go for 7 at the moment

and install 3 on the spare Pentium 4 system ... just in case

guess if 7 didn't work out it would be time to wipe the hard drive

that would mean re-installing XP as well?

am open to all fix suggestions here - relied on PE3 absolutely

can still play on Movie Maker but not for serious edits

Roxio's no good for ciné capture - only Adobe has the necessary plug ins

You can capture with WinDV, and it's free :)

Best option is to wipe the drive and start from scratch, bet v3 would work again.
All depends on if you have the time. Just be sure to copy anything you might need to another drive for safe keeping.

Thanks Chuck,

What's WinDV please?

I have a WinFast PCI card on my P4 which allows me to capture footage by way of RCA cable, that's how I managed to offload that dv cam footage to Movie Maker, so that footage is now saved, safe and off the cam :)

Several weeks ago I put a Pentium 3 into deep storage since it just cannot keep up with any software that I use now, but that P3 has a barely used XP hard drive on it. What I plan to do is swop hard drives, then I will have a new hard drive in the Pentium 4 with XP already loaded to it. Both the P3 and P4 are IDE systems so the HDD's are compatible.

Then I can just load PE3 to the newish hard drive and start over again.

As a back-up I may convert another old P4 system into something I can also use for PE3 by adding a spare firewire PCI to it + plugging a USB2 / RCA converter to it. This system has never had PE3 on it so it will also be a clean install.

How does this all sound?

Thanks,

Ric

That should work fine Ric, give it a shot :)

WinDV is a small capture utility, that's all it does is capture video from Firewire.
It is actually better (IMO) than Premiere Elements and it's free, small and easy to use.
After capture you just import the AVI files into Premiere Elements, no rendering required as they are all DV-AVI format.

Give it a try :)

Re: PE3 capture/crash - update

Postby kr236rk » Sat Dec 04, 2010 6:19 pm

installed dvd-rom in spare P4 > loaded PE3 disc to pc > successful installation > tried to open program > received following message:

"STARTUP ERROR: Adobe Premiere Elements could not load any audio drivers. Please re-install Adobe Premiere Elements 3 and start again"

Did a repair - same result. Did an uninstall / re-install - same message on trying to open program.

Tried to open program as administrator and received following message:

"ERROR: [\pre\Libraries\Asl\Foundation\Src\DirectoryRegistry.cpp-174]"

The first time I installed PE3 on a P4 XP it went sweet as a nut - am baffled.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Ric

WinDV works great - thanks - :-D - but I am now without any Adobe PE software to edit it with. I have no idea why PE3 is refusing to work on my P4's. I'm stuck, any version over 3 is going to overtax the CPU. That means I have to wait until I can get hold of a dual core.

](*,)

But it is not a CPU issue. I worked with PE3 because it supported a plug-in I needed, that's why I remained with Elements 3.
