Burned slideshow with pans and zooms in half the time.

We've done a lot of time tests before, but I didn't realize how much time you can save by exporting a slideshow with pans and zooms to DV-AVI first, then exporting the DV-AVI to DVD.

It took 38 minutes to *transcode* a five-minute slideshow during an "Export to DVD." That 38 minutes doesn't include transcoding the menu, compiling, or the physical write to DVD. The slideshow had 44 stills with pans and zooms and some transitions and soundtrack to match. All the stills were less than 1024x768.

In contrast, it took 16 minutes 20 seconds transcoding time when I exported the slideshow to DV-AVI first and then exported the DV-AVI to DVD. I did not render a preview beforehand. The export to DV-AVI took 9 minutes 20 seconds. The transcoding time for export from DV-AVI to DVD took 7 minutes.

That's a lot of time saved -- 21 minutes -- for each 5 minutes of slideshow.

I just dropped the DV-AVI on the track above the stills and disabled one of the audio tracks.

Wow, that sure is some great time savings RJ, thanks for the testing and the report :)

I've taken to exporting to DV-AVI for just about every project and I also see a real difference when burning DVDs.

Is there any quality loss or is this just a time savings? I have tried that too and noticed how quick it exports to DV-AVI. But is does create a pretty huge file too.

You can export and import up to 3 times without any noticeable quality loss as long as it is AVI (File/Export/Movie).

There's no loss in quality.

If you have to worry about size, then you don't have a big enough hard drive. Besides, most people will have rendered a preview, and all those rendered preview files can be deleted with the "delete render files" command, now that there will be a DV-AVI file.

Not worried, just an observation :)
