MPEG 2 QUESTION

Postby dalelpaq » Thu May 14, 2009 10:52 am

I downloaded a clip from my Canon HV30. It was, according to PE4, an HDV 1080p30 M2T file lasting 1:12:24 and occupying 234 MB. As a test, I input it to PE4, and saved it without any editing at all as an MPEG 2 in 1080i30format. PE4 did it but the new file now lasts 1:12:22, 2 frames less, and occupies 269 MB, some 35 MB larger! I'm guessing there must be different MPEG 2 compression algorithms?

I plan to display HD movies on my HD TV using a Western Digital HD player which will connect to my laptop via USB and then to the TV via HDMI. It gets great reviews. Does anyone know if all MPEG 2 is created equal as far as the TV is concerned? Thanks. Dale

Well, there are a number of ways and amounts to compress an MPEG.

I don't think that little bit of difference (13%) between the two file sizes will amount to any significant difference in quality.

The primary difference in between the 'i' and the 'p' I would imagine.
Interlaced will have less frames than progressive, but I would have expected the difference to be more than two frames.
