PREM 4.0 pauses when playing and must be started again

Postby Chuck Carr » Sun May 10, 2009 1:49 pm

Hi!,

I have not visted this forum in about a year. I checked the FAQs and did not see anyting to answer my question.

After I have edited a video in PREM 4.0, I like to "play" it all the way through before creating a DVD. For some time now, the play would pause and have to be started again. I have a huge beast of a computer, so RAM and speed are not the issues. (I use Vista Professional as an operating system) I recently shot a video of one of our grandchildren who had the role of Aunt in her school presentation of Mamma Mia. I made a DVD for her and it contained the same pauses that PREM 4.0 showed. Recently, my computer wouldn't boot and I had to have tech support install a new video card. (I had a very powerful Nvidia card in before.) They suggested that the new video card might solve my proble. It didn't. The video runs longer, but still pauses. Any suggestions?

Best regards,

Chuck Carr in Balmy Toronto, Canada

Just as a start Chuck, make sure nothing else is running that might interfere or steal the focus. PRE will stop playing whenever it thinks it has lost the focus. I have seen PRE hang up when the focus is stolen even temporarily by another program, and sometimes an anti-virus scan will also stop it.

This must have come up a thousand times on the Adobe Premiere Elements forum. Well, maybe 10 times.

You could try changing Premiere Elements priorty from Normal to High using the Task Manager. I tried it but didn't have success, although someone said that it seemed to work for them.

The only way I can keep Premiere Elements 4 and 7 playing without stopping is to use Windows Sniper's encapsulation feature. http://www.unhuman.com. But that product can be nasty at times, so I only use it if I really, really need Premiere Elements to keep playing without stopping.

I have had the timeline stop when trying to preview, but I have not had the same stops appear on any DVDs.

Same here (with version 4)...timeline playback occaisionally pauses but DVDs from the same timeline play without any problems.

Oh, I agree. This has nothing to do with creating the DVDs. It is just that (I think) PRE is programmed to stop playing from the timeline when it thinks it looses the Windows focus. When creating the DVD it runs in the background quite happily.

To see this happen, have some other application running (web browser. etc.), start PRE and Play and then click over to the other application. Playing will stop.

Thanks to all for your replies! I wonder if my computer trying to enter sleep mode after five minutes is the culprit. I'll try extending or removing sleep mode while I watch the preview to see if that helps. You are absolutely correct. If I switch to another application while watching preview, PREM stops.

Thanks again!

I have all the sleep and hibernate options turned off on all my computers, especially the laptops.

Chuck,

I just removed all sleep and hibernation settings and tried to play Kristy's PREM in scene mode. The preview paused within a minute. Where do I go from here? Would PREM 7.0 be any better or do you think that it is a computer problem?

I don't know what to say Chuck, this has not been a problem for anyone that I know of until now .

When was the last time your drive(s) were defragmented? System cleaned? How much virtual memory?
What happens if you have a small 2 or 3 minute project? Does it stop at all? I guess we need to get back to the basics to start with.

Like I said in an earlier post, this happens all the time. You won't be able to fix. I've already wasted countless hours trying to fix it through nomal means. I have to resort to Windows Sniper.

Must really suck if you regularly export back to tape... the export would stop as well.

This has happened to me as well. I thought this was discussed when PE4 first came out. As RJ stated I think we all just hit the play button again and have learned to live with it.
