Time Counter In Video

Postby GPauba » Fri Mar 30, 2007 8:39 am

Hi all! Needy Greg here again. Hopefully I will be able to add to the forum in the future but have just started this video editing stuff at the beginning of this year.

I am putting together a video of a lecture and am working remotely with a couple of "editors" who are providing comments of the produced video. They give me suggestions using the time that their video recorders are displaying when referencing their suggested changes and I'm trying to locate the place they are talking about.

Is there any way to add a video track of a time counter that will be displayed on the video so that we can get the exact (or nearly exact) location?

Or is there an easy way that I'm not seeing?

Thanx again for your help!

There is a tool called DVDate that will help you

I gave this utility a whirl by exporting from PE3 to an AVI file. It doesn't list a "codec" and I don't get the menue items that they show in their online documentation. Looking at the header file from DVdate they have "biCompression = dvsd" does this tell me that I output the file from PE3 incorrectly?

Any suggestions? Here is the header information

Thanx,
G

Hi G,
What is the original format of the clips you are working with? DVDate needs DV-AVI clips which come from a DV or MiniDV Camcorder tape. If you capture directly from a MiniDV Camcorder into Premiere Elements there is no need to export to AVI and then use that exported file in DVDate, use the original.

If you are starting with MPEG or some other format I am afraid you are out of luck.

Thanx for the reply Chuck! I am getting the video from a DV-AVI camera but I already had it sliced and diced into my PE3 project. So instead of using the original video "pre-project" and having to do all of the work over again, I exported it in AVI format thinking that I could have my finished project with the timeline in. This way the time would also be correct all the way through the project.

Am I thinking incorrectly? Can I just use DVdate just with the video before it is put into the PE3 Project?

What I would like to have is the time in a video that I can just put into a track so that it displays throughout the project until I have completed our collaborative (sp?) editing and then simply remove that track. Guess I would just need to film a clock with my camera!

Thanx again for your help!

Vague recollection from the Adobe forum that someone had described a way to build a basic timer that you might be able to use. If they are on this forum maybe they could re-post(?). It might be what you are looking for.

I think the easiest thing to do is shell out $19.95 for DVDate from http://www.dvdate.ru

This one is a plug-in that you use as an effect.

Thanx to all for your input!

RJ - This thread began with me having troubles with DVdate and getting the time onto my PE3 exported video. Do you have any information on running this as a PE3 plug-in as opposed to using it pre-PE3 on exported video from my camera or exported out of PE3?

Thanx,

Be carefull, the DVDate Robert is refering to is not the same one as ChucK recommended. Robert's one is a plugin for PE whereas Chuck's was a freeware utility.

It is possible to programmatically create Premiere Element titles where each title is superimposed with the next number in a sequence. You would create a master title in Premiere Elements where you have a text field with 12345678 as the text. Export the title. Using VBScript, create copies of the master and replace the 12345678 in the copies with the next number in the sequence.

I just did that with 1000 titles. I added the titles to the media bin, created a slideshow where each title is 1 frame long. I could then export the timeline as an AVI file. I'm not sure how many titles can be added to the timeline without having memory problems, so you would have to do it in small chunks.

You guys/gals rock! The DVdate plugin worked great. Easy to apply to the clips and a breeze to remove after we are finished working on it. Many thanks to the board!

Thanks again to all who helped me with the time display. The DV Date worked great -- just dropping it onto the clip like any other effect. In parts of my project the video was just being displayed on a "plasma screen", and since this control has to be on a video clip, the time displayed was small. So I just filmed a green piece of paper with my camera and downloaded this video to PE3 and applied the DV Date to it and dropped out the green (sorry, forgot the technical term for this at the moment). Worked out well. Thanx again to all.
