s-video or composite input to Canopus?

Postby Peru » Thu Nov 08, 2007 10:14 pm

I recently purchased a Canopus ADVC110 to capture video from an old analog camcorder and VHS tapes. Should I use an s-video cable or a composite (yellow, white, red) cable for the best results?

I've never used an s-video cable - does it transfer audio, too, or just the video signal? :?:

S-Video is only video, you still connect the composite audio cables, that will be your best quality.
Be sure to use a good S-Video cable and as short as possible ;)
When it comes right down to it though, if you are capturing VHS you might not even notice the difference, but I still use S-Video when I can.

Thanks for the info.

One more question: How do I tell a "good" s-video cable from a "not so good"? By the brand name?

A good cable will be pretty thick and heavy, the light ones are usually cheap.
Gold ends are good, I got a real nice one from Radio Shack. If you go to Wal Mart and look at the RCA (brand name) S-Video cables, get one that doesn't look like that ;) They are very poorly made, Monster cables are usually ok but I don't necessarily like the brand. Somebody at Best Buy should be able to point you to a good one, they aren't cheap as cables go, plan on spending around $20+ for a 6 foot cable (if you can live with a 3 foot that would be better and cheaper). Quality has its price.
