What for is .xmp file?

When I export a video as MPEG, I always get an .xmp file in addition to the .mpg file. Does anybody know what that .xmp file is for and what I should do with it? (WinXP).

I don't know the correct technical answer, but here is the short answer:

It's a file that contains metadata.

I know that it is not necessary, I usually delete those myself. The files still play just fine without them.

I found this explanation on XMP when I was looking up an AE error: RenderXMP hit item missed.....

XMP is a generalized infrastructure for a standard exchange of metadata between apps, photographs, etc.
