Transitions Help

Postby behstech » Wed Jan 20, 2010 2:09 pm

My students and I seem to not be able to get transitions to work when we share a video as a Windows Media Player file........they either freeze up the playback in Media Player or have a halting action, stop, then jerk to the next clip.

Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know of a solution?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.........

Plz your recommended solution to my eMail also.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill and Welcome to Muvipix! Glad to help...

I would start by exporting to another format, such as AVI or MOV and see if the same effect occurs. If so, we need to look further at your PRE project. If it is only WMV, then there might be a problem with a CODEC.

Try creating an AVI or MOV and let us know what you find.

What frame size are you using for the wmv and what are you playing this on cpu and ram wise? I've seen halting/jerking motion with large frame sizes in media player. Especially on an older system with a less capable cpu and low ram. It could also be a slow or congested hard drive. Make sure you have plenty of free space and defrag it regularly. It would be best if the wmv is on a separate drive from the system disc if possible.

Ok, tried it in Quicktime and used a variety of transitions and it worked fine when played back........

The system is an Intel iMac, running on the PC side of course and with 1gb ram and a 2ghz processor........plenty of disc space as this video only has 12 slides and uses one of the audio mixer sample sound files plus a couple of very short student narrations.

The frame size is 640 x 480 pixels for everything.........

Thanks for the feedback................

Bill, if Quicktime plays OK (and I assume it plays internally in the PRE timeline), then it has to be a "back end" issue. I would start by refreshing the WMV CODEC. I personally don't know where to point you, but if you Google that you will see a lot of entries. Or try the Klite Mega CODEC pack - lots of people use it here.

You might also pass on your OS type and WMP version.

It could also be a resource issue. You mention you have an iMac, but are you running Boot Camp or Parallels? 1 GB of ram is not a heck of a lot for a Windows machine alone, less for a Mac running Windows in emulation. I think this would cause a lot of disk swapping for virtual memory and contribute to your jerky performance issues. Short answer, add more ram.
