Settings for different videosources

Postby thhult » Thu Feb 20, 2014 11:31 am

Hi,
I'm having trouble getting the right settings for a new video project.
I have two different video sources,
1. HDV camera (Canon HV40) and
2. mobile HD (Samsung Galaxy S4).

For a new project in PrPro, I have the following settings:
HDV 1080i25 (50i).
Imported clips from mobile gets the format in Pr Pro:
1920x1080 (0,75) 29.97 fps. The image is not displayed in 16 x 9 format (must be scaled)

If I instead import the same video in Pr El and exports it to Pr Pro with format:
MPEG2 1440x1080i 25
it appears correctly in Pr Pro.

I want the ability to use both video clips from HDV camera and Mobil.

How do you do?

regards
Thomas

Most likely, your version of Premiere Pro is misinterpreting the footage from the mobile device. The pixel aspect ratio is incorrect, it should be 1,00 instead of 0,75. Change the aspect ratio of the clip to 1,00 using Interpret Footage and see if that takes care of the problem.

Thanks Bob,
I Interpret Footage the aspect ratio of the clip to 1,00 and it looks ok. The sequence has 1440x1080 (1,3333). Does it have to do with 1440 and 1920 ?

In Premiere Pro CS4, sequence properties are established by you when you create the sequence and select a preset in the New Sequence Dialog Box. This normally happens at the beginning of new project. You will first be asked to set the new project's properties and then the new sequence dialog will be displayed for you to select a preset and continue. 1444x1080 (1,3333) is consistent with having selected an HDV preset.

Premiere Pro is very good at handling mixed video formats, 1440x1080(1,3333) and 1920x1080(1,0000) on the same timeline will be fine. The sequence preset you choose will potentially affect the quality of your video. Normally, you would select a preset that matches your video. But, with mixed sources, you can't match all the sources. You'll have to pick the one you think will be best for that project. In this case, you can use either an HDV sequence or a 1920x1080 sequence, they will both work. HDV does have lower horizontal resolution than 1920x1080, but the difference is difficult to see. Some of the factors you can consider when choosing a sequence preset are how much footage is in HDV vs how much is in 1920x1080; which footage do you want to have the least resampling; and, what format will you be outputting to.
