My drives are messed up

Postby ksnielsen » Fri Jan 30, 2009 11:04 am

:(
I am running XP
My hard drive died on my Sony (I had 2-200 GB drives striped together so it was listed as one drive.) I bought a new 500 GB drive to use for my system disk. The other 200 GB drive that was still working is now a data drive. The recovery disks were used to restore the system.

Originally my hard drive was drive C and my DVD-RW was drive D. Now the main hard drive is drive C, the 200 GB is drive D and the DVD-RW drive is E, the DVD-ROM is F. So now everything is one letter off. The computer thinks my DVD-RW is the DVD-ROM. How do I get the computer to know that Drive E is DVD-RW? As it is write now, if I try to burn a DVD it goes to the 200 GB drive instead of the DVD-RW.

Very good Steve :)
Just remember that there will be a problem if you try to change a drive letter for one device if that drive letter is already is being used by another.

You might want to go into Device Manager and delete the DVD drives and then restart Windows so they will be reinstalled/enabled.
That should fix the connection problems, if not then you can do the change drive letter route that Steve suggests above.

I changed my drive letters and I removed the device in device manager and restarted the computer. My drive will say DVD-RW Drive until I put a blank DVD into it. Then it thinks it is a CD. And then I can't burn anything. My DVD burner says it is a Sony DVD-RW DW22A. I tried to find firmware for it but I haven't had any luck. Have you got any other ideas for me?

What makes you think that the computer is mistaking the DVD drive for a CD drive?
Are you getting error messages, if so what are they?

This should not happen just because you add a drive to your system.
I have added many drives over the years and have not had a serious problem with the CD or DVD drives getting confused.

When I put a blank DVD into the drive it asks me what I want to do with the CD. I then changes the description on that drive from DVD-RW Drive to CD Drive. I can't copy anything to the disk in the drive.

This is a very common problem, just do a Google search for 'Computer thinks dvd drive is a cd drive'.

Updating the drive firmware along with reinstalling windows are among the suggested solutions.
What happens if you remove the new secondary drive, do things go back to normal?

I was able to burn a DVD from PRE7. Maybe if I load Roxio I will be able to burn DVD outside of PE. Thanks for the help.

Could be that you just need to reinstall Premiere Elements, just a repair install even.
Don't know that you should install Roxio, and if it is already on your machine that could be causing some of the problems.
