Using PE2 with 2gigs of RAM

Postby Doreen L. » Tue Apr 03, 2007 11:16 pm

Since there has been discussions of PE2 not running as well with more than a gig of RAM, I was a little concerned when I got my new computer with its two gigs of RAM. Well, the program has been running great with just one exception and I don't know if it's a RAM issue or not. If I add an mp4 song, it takes PE2 about twenty minutes to create a peak file for a three minute song. Now, it was slow on my old computer but we're talking four or five minutes. I don't convert songs to that format (it's my kids). Other than that, the program runs great - even SteadyMove doesn't bog it down.

BTW, my computer problems didn't end after I reinstalled the operating system. I discovered the next day that PE2 wasn't recognizing two processors nor was XP Pro. Dell decided to replace the motherboard. Guess what? Same problem. After confounding their tech department in Phoenix, they decided that the recovery disk they sent me screwed everything up. We went through a reinstall without it (an hour of diagnose and two hours to reinstall. Thank God I have cable internet) and 'success'! The funny part was that they used Dell Connect and I could hear the techs 'discussing' the problem and watched them trying different ideas. I took the right attitude (don't get crazy) and we actually had a lot of fun in the process. And my refurbished computer ended up with a new motherboard and hard drives.

My ASUS motherboard has been running with 2 MB RAM for about 18 months and no problems. However, I don't stress it with humongus projects as some do. I do believe a properly designed motherboard will manage 2 GB RAM properly.

I don't work with mp4 files, but PrEl may not be optimized to convert them. Try searching for a converter utility that is optimized to do this. PrEl is not the best application for every odd job.

While we're on this thread, people may be interested to know that PE1 also runs perfectly with 2MB of RAM!
All the best,
Bill

I have 2.5GB of RAM installed and it works fine with all versions.

Doreen, If you want to post or email the mp4 I could test it on my machine. I didn't think version 2 supported mp4?

Ooops. I went back and checked again. They're mpeg4 audio files. It's no big deal. I just have to remember to check any song for format when pulling songs off the kids' computer.
