Windows 8 the best OS of all time -- PC World magazine July

Postby George Tyndall » Sat Jun 08, 2013 8:34 am

Microsoft's Windows 8 is not only

hands down the best version of Windows Microsoft has ever released

but also

its many basic desktop funcions blow the competition out of the water.

Microsoft snuck some handy functionality into the modern UI, for which Windows' rivals have no match.

The article goes on to describe 12 different features that make Windows 8

the best operating system around.

Two of the 12 include:
--Native Web Browser
--Browser Security, with IE for the past 2 year having been the target of far fewer exploits than Apple's Safarri, Google's Chrome, or Mozilla's Firefox, according to a Symantec report and
--Getting Things Done

when it's time to roll up your sleeves, grit your teeth, and get things done, nothing tops a Windows machine.

With its new Refresh option, according to the article, one can even perform a clean install of one's OS without actually first wiping one's HDD clean.

I would probably agree on most counts. It's just the interface that drives me nuts. :ha: But I think we've had this discussion before. :)

Do you mean the one where you recommended not "upgrading" to IE 10?

I'm sticking with Win 7 and IE 9 for the forseeable future.

n fact, I've been saving over the past yeat so I could purchase a second HP with Win 7 installed while it is still available.

No, when I said "we" I meant Muvipixers in general. There was a subdiscussion mixed into this thread:

I'm just not fond of what MS has done. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had given us the option of having the Metro interface or sticking with the Start button desktop style. They're supposed to release an update by the end of this month to address some of those issues for us traditionalists, but from what I've read it will likely still not include the Start button.

The release at the end of June will be the preview release. I'm staying away from that because I've read that when 8.1 is released at the end of the year, you will have to install your applications again when you "upgrade" from the preview release to the final 8.1 release. Those people with Windows 8 that wait until the end of the year for 8.1 won't have to reinstall their applications.

I've found no reason for the traditional start menu. In fact, I'm glad to get rid of it. It's quicker to navigate to a tile in organized blocks of tiles than it is to navigate to an application in a long list of alphabetized names, which may have submenus that might pop up who knows where. You can also just start typing the name of the application, and apps with matching names are displayed. If you are on the desktop, right-clicking in the lower left corner pops up a short list of administrative items, such as the Control Panel and Programs and Features.
