Windows Automatic Updates

Postby BuddyB » Tue May 14, 2013 8:19 am

Don't'cha' just love Microsoft. I have an automatic updates mess-up and they want $99 to fix it; may take them 10 mins to fix. I haven't figured out how yet, but there is a way. What happens is that there are 10 updates that want to download every time you reboot the sys. then when it's coming up it will start the install, then revert. I don't have any viruses or malware, that's been checked. If anyone her can point me in the right direction to do manual downloads it would be greatly appreciated. Then I'll worry about automatic. I've been in the Control Panel and it appears everything is set for auto; may be something in the Registry. At this point I just don't know.
PS: I cleaned the Registry in 2-3 mins and now Auto Updates is working. I guess I'll just have to pay myself $99 huh. Sorry for the intrusion here. Everyone at Muvipix is so very helpful. I really appreciate this place.

Hi BuddyB, I had that problem once on my Win 7 notebook. Unfortunately there is no quick fix for that. What solved the problem for me was to download each failed update individually and install it one by one. It was a very tedious process, because each update required a restart. But it fixed the problem for me and next time the automatic updates worked fine again.
Click on your Start button > All Programs > Windows Update, a new window opens and tells you that updates are available for your machine. Click on available updates, this will give you a list with updates for your computer. Download and install each one individually. See if that works for you.

Sounds like a good plan from Gerlinde, but first turn off automatic updates so that it's not fighting you trying to install them on its own in the background. If you get it all worked out, then turn automatic updates back on.

I always update manually. This way I know if an update screws up something. ;)

If you still have trouble with the "one at a time" thing, post the number (not amount, but the update's number) of the update(s) that fail.

What also would be a good idea, before you attempt to install the updates manually, do some housekeeping. I run usually CCleaner and clean up the registry and also close any programs that you may have running.
I don't think it is necessary to turn off Automatic Updates, but it can't hurt if you do.

I repeated this part of the original post in case anyone missed it. It sounds like BuddyB has successfully used the self help feature of the forum and everything is now working properly. No need to turn off automatic updates.

Doh! Thanks Bob. I didn't read it that way the first time.
