As to the Seagate HDs - the point here is .... always have a resent BACK UP of your data! ::C

Here are my complete part lists for each build (just in case you would like to know):

Quad core system:
LGA1155.JPG

6 core system:
LGA2011.JPG

I picked this particular case, because it has front iEEE1394, USB2 and Audio jacks.
And the monitor will mach my existing monitor for a dual display set up.

The difference between the 2 is only ~$140, that makes it even more difficult. I upgraded both video cards to the GTX 650 ti 2gb card, since the price went down since yesterday #-o

Cheryl, could you explain about "adding that card to the list"? Not trying to hijack the thread. I think it's very much related. Thanks.

This link has a full explanation (several pages) and a script, but you can do this manually to add the card to the list:

Gerlinde, I looked at the i7 3930 too. But, in the end I had to shave a little $ here and there.

Dave, if you try this with your card (the same one as mine) let me know how it worked. I am feeling a head ache coming on with changing my OS from XP to W7, transferring data, and updating drivers for my equip. :drunken: At least my tech guy will help get it up and running. He is actually excited since he hasn't built one this fast before.

Cheryl, thanks for the additional info on the video card. So you looked at the i7-3930 too... :-k Would you go for it, if you did not have to shave of the $$$ ?

Honestly, I'm kind of leaning to that direction. I can shave off some money from my other part of the budget. I was looking at the i7-3770 mostly because I wanted to find a compromise.
My husband said he wanted to start a new carrier as a gamer :hyst:

But, he already gave me the go-ahead to go with what would be better for video editing. He says, the odds that he will be playing games on the new machine are probably pretty slim. I will allocate some of the money to get him an iPad or similar. He was playing around with our daughter's and he really liked it. I have trouble seeing any thing on the small screen.

For gaming the i7 3770 will be good. I was building based around AE specs. If I could spend more I would go with the i7 3930. Going with that one would drive up other things as per my understanding. I am having to spend for the upgrade on PrPro & AE so that factored into my overall decision. My tech guy said I could get an additional stick of 32G RAM via a USB port. Not sure if I need 64 G total and wondering how that would work.

Since your husband likes gaming, here is a comparison for the intel 510 series (I am getting the 520)

Readyboost (which is what allows a usb flash device to be used as system cache) is disabled when the system drive is an SSD.

The GTX 650 has a memory interface width of 128 bits and 384 gpu cores. Compare this to the GTX 570 which has 320 bits and 420 cores and the GTX 550 ti which has 192 bits and 192 cores. The GTX650 is great for gaming, but the limited memory interface width is going to affect the type of gpu acceleration that Premiere Pro does. The GTX 570 is going to be faster for that purpose than the GTX 650. I suspect even the GTX 550 ti will have better performance. Even though the GTX 650 has more cores than the GTX 550 ti and Premiere Pro will use all of them, many of those cores will be idle waiting while the data moves in and out of the card. How much is the 570 vs the 650?

I have an older GTX 470 which has a 320 bit memory interface and 448 cores and an Intel i7 2600k processor and I'm very satisfied with the performance. FYI, I upgraded to Premiere Pro CS6 and I'm finding the gpu acceleration to be significantly faster than with CS5.

The gtx-650 ti 2gb cost $160 and the gtx-570 2gb is $320. The 550 is only $130 after rebate. I think that I don't want to spend too much money on the video card at this time. It will be easy to upgrade down the road should it be necessary.

Thank you for the reassurance, John. :-D
I have watched endless How-to videos, it looks very strait forward and easy. The only thing that worries me a little, is the BIOS setup.

I made my decision and ordered my DIY computer: :exc:

Final Parts Order.JPG

I went overboard with the CPU and skimped on the GPU. :-D
I still did not come to a decision, if I will go with Windows 7 or 8. :conf:
Now I have to wait .... :-

John :tx:

If it is any consolation, my last desktop is now over 8 years old ( Sony Vaio PCV-RS620G ). I'm still using it and I will keep it for the grand kids to use when they visit. It did cost more than this computer at the time.
