Windows 10 and PE 9

Windows 10 and PE 9I upgraded to windows 10 a couple of weeks ago and for the most part it went well. I am having an issue with PE9 which is a little hard to explain. There are three symptoms, all related. First, if I run my cursor along the time ruler I get a series of lines, and going back and forth fills in the space, kind of like spray painting. What I end up with is an image of the bottom of the monitor. Second, when I play a clip in the timeline I also get a series of lines behind the time marker. As in the first issue, this turns out to be an image of the bottom of the monitor including the controls, play etc. This makes editing a little difficult although I can remove the lines by zooming the timeline in or out. The third issue is more of a problem. If I move a clip on the time line or try to add one to the timeline the timeline disappears and is replaced by an image of part of the monitor. Once again using the zoom control I can get the timeline back but it can take several tries to get the clip where I want it to go. I thought the problem might be my graphics card, an ATI Radeon hd2600 which is no longer supported by amd so I got a new card, EVGA GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5 64bit. This did not solve the problem. I installed an old copy Sony Vegas Movie Studio and it works fine. I also downloaded the trial version of PE13 and it worked. I don't like the Vegas Movie studio and I was quite happy with PE9 so I would rather not have to get PE13. Has anyone any idea what could be causing this.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Are there any particular reasons for wishing to stay with PrElv9?
If Adobe stick with their historical upgrade cycle for PrEl, v14 should be available in a matter of three or four weeks or so. Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Try deleting the preview files?
Re: Windows 10 and PE 9If you upgraded in place to Windows 10 from a previous Windows version, it may help to completely uninstall Premiere Elements and do a clean install. Sometimes applications have dependencies that the OS upgrade process doesn't address. I don't know whether Premiere Elements 9 has that issue, but a reinstall won't hurt.
The problem you are having has to do with how applications refresh/redraw the content of their application window when changes occur. When a change occurs, a command is sent to the application to update the changed portion of the window. If the commands are missed somehow, the update won't occur and you can see effects like the ones you describe. This can happen for many reasons. There could be an operating system incompatibility, there could be another running application that intercepts the update commands, or there can be an issue with the application itself. It's also possible that the application did update the window and an issue with the video driver prevented it from being displayed -- this is far less common and I don't feel this is your problem. Most likely, there is an issue with the application and if it isn't due to an OS incompatibility, a reinstall may help.
Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Thanks for the replies. John, PE 9 works well for what I need so I don't want to spend $80 dollars if I can fix it easily. Peru, I tried deleting the preview files and that didn't help. Bob, I will reinstall PE 9, one quick question. I am currently working on a project. Will the prel file be deleted if I uninstall PE 9? I'd hate to have to start again.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Uninstalling and reinstalling the program will have no effect on your current projects, Paul.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9I reinstalled PE 9 but I still have the same problem. I made sure I installed all the updates and tried several old projects and made a new project with no success. I'd be grateful for any other suggestions.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Some of the less obvious but very necessary bits of software for PrEl (and PPro) that need to be up to date include Quicktime. Is your Win 10 version of Quicktime up to date? Ditto Video drivers?

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Checked Quicktime and video drivers, both up to date.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9OK. T'was just a thought.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9One more thought, Premiere Elements was released prior to Windows 8 and 10. Try setting the compatibility mode to Windows 7. Right click on the shortcut you use to start Premiere Elements 9 and select properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the checkbox labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select Windows 7 from the dropdown selection menu. Click "OK".
Now, cross your fingers and launch Premiere Elements 9. Did that make a difference? If that didn't help, I'd like you to download and install the free trial of Premiere Elements 13. I'd like to know whether that works or has the same problem.
Re: Windows 10 and PE 9Just a couple of things to know if you try the trial version of V13...
You can install it in addition to any other versions that you already have installed, without one version interfering with another. BUT, don't open your PrEl 9 project(s) in V13 without making a copy first. Opening the old version project in a newer version will cause the project to be converted to the newer format, and then it won't be able to be read by the older version program. And you can't depend on all effects and adjustments making the translation intact. Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9My two cents: Definitely do NOT try to open a version 9 project in version 13!
The last couple of versions have been more closely aligned. I can open open version 12 projects with version 13, for instance. (Though I can't then re-open them in version 12 after!) But there is a big leap between version 10 and version 11, and a big leap between version 9 and version 10. Trying to open a version 9 project in version is most certainly going to corrupt the file. Re: Windows 10 and PE 9I had already downloaded the trial version of V13 and it worked. I tried some V9 projects and had no problem. Bob's reply showed up 2 minuted after I got my confirmation email and serial # to unlock V13. I went ahead and tried V9 in win 7 compatibility mode and it didn't work. I had already tried some of my projects in the trial of V13 and they were still ok in V9. However I made copies of any projects I am working on and I'll use them in V13. I already like 13 so I'm happy enough as things stand. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Re: Windows 10 and PE 9You may want to hold off purchasing PE 13 for a while. PE 14 is about to be released, and, if Adobe follows past history, I would expect it to be released by the end of September. Adobe has a post announce upgrade policy. If you buy PE 13 after the PE 14 announcement, you can take advantage of any reduced price for PE13 and get a complimentary upgrade to PE 14. see this page for requirements and eligibility. If you buy now, you won't get the free upgrade.
