Using a cheap cam for MiniDV playback/captureAny reason why using a cheap MiniDV camcorder like the Canon ZR800 ($150 brand new) to play back and capture tapes from my prosumer MiniDV Sony PD170 would be a bad idea? I'd like to reduce the wear on the heads of the expensive cam, but not if it means losing video quality...

Re: Using a cheap cam for MiniDV playback/captureProbably a great idea, Jack.
Since you're just reading digital data from the tape, you certainly won't see any reduction in quality. (Worst case is that you get pixelation or digital break-up, but I doubt you will.) HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Re: Using a cheap cam for MiniDV playback/captureI have used my cheap JVC to capture tapes that were recorded with pro cameras Jack, it looks great.
Like Steve says it is all really just data on the tape anyway, it will work just fine 1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.
2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.
