I've been capturing my collection of miniDV tapes with Scenalyzer Live, though not free software. It's very comprehensive software with some extra features such as batch capturing. The interface took some getting used to, and could use better instructions: http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html

I am with RJ. I used scenalyzer to capture all my clips. Afterward I was able to join clips, seperate clips as necessary, remove bad video and name each clip with a name that menant something. Then when I want to edit in PPro I know what is in each clip.
