Preference on DVD Burner

Postby rcsec » Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:16 pm

I'm using PE3, Nero 8 and Veratim DVD-Rs, is there a brand of DVD burner (or burners) that produce better results (higher quality/longer life) DVD's than others?
Thanks,
rcsec

I have not heard anything about any brand or model producing better quality or longer life DVDs. I think the technology is pretty much the same throughout the industry.
The only difference I have seen is in the availability of drivers and firmware updates. Philips, Toshiba, NEC and BenQ are among some of the companies producing better burners I have heard about.

The lifespan of a DVD is mainly a function of the media itself and how you handle and store it. The quality of how well the disc is written is affected by the burner and they do differ. You might want to take a look at this site: http://www.consumersearch.com/www/compu ... views.html

That site lists the major dvd test/review sites and provides a nice jumping off place for looking at detailed reviews. It also rates the review sites with a "credibility" ranking and briefly describes it. Saves you a lot of time hunting for reviews. Well worth looking at when you get ready to choose a specific burner.

The best burner to buy is Plextor. They are pricey, but are built like tanks and typicallly are the performance leader. A more reasonable balance between speed and power are the Lite-On, Benq, and believe it or not Sony. Plextor use to make drives for Sony. Not sure that they still do. But I wouldn't be afraid of any of these.

I just finished a production run of 100 DVDs, 1:09:00 in length, motion menus generated in Encore CS3, burned to Memorex DVD+Rs on a Lite-On LH20A1 and only had 1 bad burn... and that was most likely a defective Memorex. So, I'd say the Lite-On was well worth the $38 I paid for it. :-D

BTW, burning from Encore took about 12 min. per DVD; burning from imgburn took about 8 min. each... :-k

I have the same burner (LITE-ON) and haven't had a negative issue yet.

I have a Memorex 16x DL burner and a LiteOn 16x DL burner. Both came with Nero lite versions and either PowerDVD or WinDVD. I've had trouble recording CD's on the Liteon but okay on the Memorex. I've had them for over 3 years at least.

Robert when I built my computer I used a Memorex 16x DL and a Memorex 52x CD burner and haven’t had a single hiccup! You can’t beat NEC technology and they have been around for a long time.
