Changing Timeline Time to Frames

Postby Chuck Engels » Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:18 pm

Hi All,
I have been watching the Lynda.com tutorials on After Effect CS3 and have been learning some new things. One of the reasons to watch the tutorials is to see what can also be done in Premiere Elements in the way of user interface, shortcuts and tricks.

One of the things I learned today also can be accomplished in Premiere Elements. It may be useful for some, if nothing else it is pretty cool. I haven't found anything else so far that works in both programs but I will keep searching.

If you hold the CTRL key down and click in the time indicator it will change to a frame indicator, so the CTI would become the CFI or Current Frame Indicator rather than the Current Time Indicator. Screen shots follow :)

You'll find that anywhere there is a blue underlined timecode in Premiere Elements such as in the Project media bin, you can CTRL-click it and the mode flip-flops.

I've learned that the Blue text with dotted underline is called "Hot Text". It can be changed in one or multiple ways. Like scrubbing or clicking, and in this case CTL clicking. After Effects has more than just the Timecode and Frames modes, there is also a Film mode as well.

One of the other things that I learned about After Effects, that doesn't work in Premiere Elements is this.

If you move your mouse cursor over a panel and press the Tilde key "~" the panel will maximize and cover the whole screen. Then you just press the Tilde key again to make it go back to normal. That is really cool when you are changing effect properties or working with keyframes on the timeline.

I had thought that this would probably work in Premiere Elements but sadly it did not.

Another cool thing that I learned in After Effects that doesn't work in Premiere Elements (but wish it did because it is really cool) is this;

When changing properties (Transforms in AE) such as Position, you can click on the X or Y coordinate number and enter a calculation. If the x position is 330.0 you can enter -100 directly after the 330.0 (so the numbers in the box look like this: 330.0-100) and press enter. It will subtract 100 from the 330 and move the clips X coordinate to 230.

You can also use / to divide by a number, say to cut the position in half.
You can use + to add to the number and * to multiply the number by another number.

This would be of great help in Premiere Elements but it is good to know that this works in After Effects :)

Chuck lots of short cuts and built in calculations in AE. I find myself trying to use the AE keyboard shortcuts in Pro without thinking and then realize some don't work. What would be really nice in PrEl & Pro is to change a layers anchor point!
