Title Effect Using Masks.

Postby Chris B » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:02 pm

I saw a similar effect elsewhere and likes the "news style" look. Here's my attempt (done in VMS but PE will be fine)

Basically just a mask of one video overlaid onto another with a title added on top of that.

Video tracks as follows:

Title
Frame
Mask
Title background video
Background Video

I like the look too of a motion background as the title background. I don't use PrEl anymore, but am glad to see the mask feature was added. On earlier versions you had to create a track matte. Nice one Chris. :TU:

A nice-looking lower-third, Chris!

If you can detail how you did it, I'm sure many Muvipixers would sure appreciate it.

No problem Steve.

I'm of course using video in the example from the excellent Muvipix motion backgrounds. :-D

I used Vegas Movie Studio but the Track Matte in Premier Elements would do the same thing.

First you need to create a frame. I drew this is LibreOffice Draw (http://www.libreoffice.org/) and then did a screen capture to Photoshop Elements to scale it to the right size. I also filled in the middle of it to create a mask. These two images are here for reference although doing it again I might make the border slightly thinner. You could also the boxes to the esdge of the video and not have the left and right sides of the frame.

In VMS I used the following settings. I'm only making notes of where things are changed from the default..

Track 5 - Background Video
Track 4 - Lower Third Background Video. This is set as a composting child to track 3. The opacity was set to 75% as well.
Track 3 - Matt set as a multiply (mask). I applied the "Mask generator" effect using the Luminance Mask inverted.
Track 2 - Frame. I applied "invert" and then the "Mask Generator" again using Luminance.
Track 1 - Title Text - slight background shadow and free-form positioning to get it "just right"

Couple of fades applied and we're done. Here's a picture of the final workspace showing how everything's laid out.
