PSE9 to PSE12

Postby Bob D » Fri Dec 27, 2013 11:49 am

Hi all! It has been some time since I've been on this forum. I haven't been doing too much video/picture work in recent years.

Over a year ago I bought a new computer (Gateway; Intel i5; 64bit;, 6G RAM, 1TB space) and since then when using PSE9 it had some weird quirks (mouse arrow never worked, so very hard to manage pix. For Christmas I received PSE12. Hopefully things will work better!

Knowing that sometimes converting from one version to another can get tricky with Adobe, I knew to come back here to ask this question. Are there any concerns/issues/etc that I should be concerned about when converting from PSE9 to PSE12?

Thanks - Happy New Year!

I definitely would NOT open my version 9 project in version 12, Bob. The program has gone through some major changes since version 9, and it will likely lead to all kinds of buggy behavior and quite possibly corruption.

I highly recommend you finish your version 9 project in version 9, then start fresh in version 12.

Thanks Steve. I don't really have any projects going on in PSE9. I'm really more concerned with the catalog converting to PSE12 without any issues. If I recall correctly I don't think it was very smooth for me when going from PSE7 to PSE9. I lost some tags.

And I'm sorry, Bob. I misspoke. I see now that you're talking about Photoshop Elements rather than Premiere Elements. And of course you can open pretty much any version of a PSD in pretty much any version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

If you've just upgraded your operating system, you may have some issues converting your catalog though. It depends on what operating system your'e coming from. XP and Windows 7, for instance, store their files in very different directory sets, so it may not be an easy transition.

But anything is worth a try! Just make sure to keep a copy of your old catalog as a backup just in case something corrupts during the conversion.

Hi Bob and Happy New Year

1 - You may have already been here
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements.html
but if not, it can be useful for the PDF files of the "helps" and for specific pointers

2 - I do recollect seeing some problems reported on the Adobe user forum where Catalogs which had been created in previous versions and then upgraded to PSE 12 were having problems of not correctly creating version sets of photos.

Here is a reference to a Photoshop Elements forum thread on the Adobe site that discusses the problem. I know that the thread is long, but I am not attempting to summarize because different people seem to have some different results.
