Printing non standard cropped photos

Postby mercurycoach » Mon Dec 10, 2012 9:00 am

I've got some images I want to take to Wal mart and make prints of.

These images have been cropped in non standard sizes.

What I would like to do is create a white background layer BEHIND/BENEATH my image layer in a standard size, say 8x10, merge the two layers save and copy to my thumbdrive and take to Walmart and make my standard size print.

I've got both Elements 11 and the full Photoshop CS6 but I'm at a loss to do what I'd like on either.

Seems like it should be simply but I'm at the beginning of the learning curve on both.

Thanks!
Running 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion a6750f, 2.3 GHz AMD Phenom X4 9650, 8 gigs RAM and 1 TB hard drive. Coming soon - USB 3.0 card to accommodate a 3 TB Seagate external hard drive.

All you need to do is change the Canvas Size (making sure you've got a white background selected for the canvas).

The program will extend the white background to 8x10 around your photo.

In CS6 make a new 8x10 layer with 300 dpi and white background. In Bridge select your cropped photo and File>Place>in Photoshop. The cropped image will be a new layer with the Transform box. Reposition or scale (down not up) if needed and hit Enter. Save as a jpg and the layers will merge. If you want to keep as a psd too then first save the file and then save a second time as a jpg.

You may want to do a test print because of the cropped photo lost pixels during the crop. There is a way to upscale slightly, but I don't know enough about that. Maybe someone else will have something to add.

EDIT: Looks like Steve posted the same time and his way is faster. I tend to do things the long way. :)
