PSE11 Guided Edit: Wow!

Postby George Tyndall » Sat Oct 06, 2012 5:19 pm

PSE11 has cut my per-slide editing time to a fraction of what it was with PSE7 and PS12 (CS5.5).

Using the new Guided Edit capabilities of PSE11, I was able to a) create depth of field and b) add a vignette effect to a jpeg slide in a matter of a few seconds.

After closing the new PSD file that had been created by Guided Edit, I reopened it with the PSE11 Editor in Expert view so I could visualize how many steps had been accomplished by Guided Edit during those few seconds.

The following image depicts the steps that were accomplished:

Amazing!

P.S. Steve, do you know whether, in addition to PRE11, PSE11 is also now 64-bit, and is that that the reason the process occurs so quickly?

A 64-bit native version of the Photoshop Elements 11 editor is installed on 64-bit systems. The Organizer is 32-bit.

So is Guided Edit doing something similar to what Actions in PS12 (CS5.5) accomplish?

Actions are recordings of the steps you take in Photoshop to perform some task. The next time you want to perform that task, you can run the action to do those same steps again automatically. Actions aren't particularly interactive. They perform the exact same steps using the same settings as originally recorded. If there is a need to allow a manual adjustment to be made, a command can be inserted into the action to display a message and stop execution of the action to allow the user to make the manual setting. The user can then continue execution to complete the action. (The Photoshop Elements Action player doesn't have the ability to stop and resume like the Photoshop action player.)

In addition to Actions, Photoshop supports scripting. Scripts are programs that can be written by a knowledgeable user to perform tasks similar to an Action, but under the control of the script. Because they are programs, scripts have access to the internal capabilities of Photoshop and can do things that you can't do with an Action. Scripts can display panels and controls and be interactive just like the built-in features of Photoshop.

The Guided Edits in Photoshop Elements are much closer to scripts than Actions. They perform a series of steps, like an action, but are not recordings of the steps. The guided edit is a program, similar to a script, and can allow interaction with the user. Unlike scripts, Adobe has not publically documented how to create guided edit programs. You cannot create your own.

Thank you very much for that detailed explanation.

Actually, Bob, I don't think Photoshop Elements 11 is 64-bit. But the program has definitely been tuned up!

You're correct Steve. When I looked it up earlier I misread the tech specs. It said the Premiere Elements Editor was native 64-bit on 64-bit systems. I misread it as Photoshop Elements Editor. Sorry George!

Interesting Bob and Steve, as there is no question in my mind that the actions of both the PSE11 Organizer and Editor seem a bit faster than with PSE7.

BTW, Steve, I am able to open both the 7 and 11 Organizers simultaneously. Is that somthing new, or just the first time I noticed it?

The two Organizers are working with separate catalog files, so they shouldn't interfere with each other.
