muvipix.com Upgrade Coming Soon !

Postby Ron » Thu Apr 26, 2007 2:55 pm

Well, we've only been open for only a couple of months and we've already outgrown our current server. Our memberships are increasing steadily, especially over the past couple of weeks, and the current server configuration is showing its limitations.

In advance, we apologize for the speed of the site at times and for our up and coming transition to a faster, more powerful host server. We anticipate an increase in download/upload speeds by at least 10X (this is a conservative estimate - most likely more). And don't think that it's going unnoticed that all of you are putting up with the performance issues currently at muvipix.com, we sincerely appreciate your patience. It only seems to occur at peak hours (this is probably different depending on your physical location), but it is occurring and becoming more noticeable as our subscriptions increase. We hope to experience very minimal downtime during the transition.

So stay tuned. We'll not only have new stuff soon, but we'll also be more powerful and ready for the future as far as taking advantage of any technology that will make your muvipix visit as stress-free and streamlined as possible.

Thanks again for your support !
Regards,
-Ron

Update:

We had to disable uploads to the Gallery temporarily. This is to ensure continuity during the transition to the new servers. Please refrain from posting comments on the individual items as well.

Everything will be back to normal in a few days - but much faster.

I posted a topic a couple of weeks ago in the muvipix.com suggestions area about the perceived speed of the DVI forum. I have found that they use vBulletin and switched in mid 2005. I also talked to a programmer friend who says they are probably using AJAX technology which is being used in the newest online applications to speed up the 'user experience'. Using the back button on that board usually refreshes the previous page almost instantaneously. Just thought you would like to know. :)

Thanks for the info, Ken. Ajax is next on my list of things to learn :)

Update:

The transition to the new server is almost complete. The entire site will be down during the new DNS change.

We'll take the site down tommorow (Tuesday, May 1) about 6 AM or so EST. How long the site will be inaccessable depends on how fast the resolve takes to the new server, usually 24-48 hours, but as soon as it does and we run some final tests, we'll be up and running again - on the faster platform. All changes will be transparent to everyone and we'll pick up right where we left off.

Thanks for your patience through all of this.
Regards,
-Ron

we're using ajax at work for the development of an olap data tool and some internal collection applications. it's pretty amazing the speed it gives you.

it will be interesting to see the speed difference after the migration ron.

It is faster, though the original was not bad. But speed is good!

Glad to hear about the changes... muvipix.com download speed for me has been very slow, in the 40-50 KB/s range... just tried the new server and got an average 773 KB/s!!! Total time for the 15.1 MB file = 20 seconds!!!

Thanks Jack & ed, it's all coming together :)

And obviously, a few of you die-hards are getting in here from direct links ... that's OK, but just bare with us. Give it one more day. The new server has propagated and I'm working out some little bugs here and there. If anyone sees anything weird, please post in the Water Cooler and I'll get right on it. I've navigated around and it looks 90%. The speed is incredible, so check that out for yourself as well if you get a chance.

Again, thanks for all your patience and let's make some great videos !

-Ron
