Slo-Mo Schnauzers

Postby momoffduty » Wed Apr 15, 2015 9:30 am

I had a little fun with the boys and slo-mo. I stopped in BB the other day and got a great deal on an open box item, the Sony RX100 iii. This will be for those days when I don't want to lug the big DSLR around. Nice little compact. I downloaded the time-lapse app, but haven't tried it yet.

The clanking noise is their dog tags.

A lot of fun Cheryl! Looks like a great space for them to play safely too. The sound track was perfect. Any particular reason you're using Flickr instead of Vimeo?

Nice video. It is interesting to see them run in slow motion. They seem to be more leaping than actual running. Cool look.

Thanks Sidd. Sometimes they run at each other and the black dog will jump over the little dog. Hopefully I can get video of that sometime. It is like a game of chicken.

Cheryl, I am curious about the shooting and the rendering.
I read that it can shoot at 120 fps.

It shoots 120fps 720p 50mbps in the XAVC S codec. An SDXC card is needed for this format. The other formats are AVCHD & MPEG4 and an SDHC card will work. But, only the SDXC card will allow an option of using the XAVC S format.

In order to edit you will need the codec. By downloading the free Play Memories software from Sony will give you the codec.

Bridge wouldn't recognize the files until I had the codec. It did recognize the RAW files in CS6.

The Schnauzer video is slowed down to 10%. I did not do any frame blending.

One note on the camera, it is very slippery. I almost dropped it day 1, but fortunately I was using the wrist strap. There are grips for the camera by 3rd parties, but I bought the custom fitted camera case. A tripod mount is still accessible with the case on.

I like Sony cameras but they have a habit of making proprietary prieferials in order to use their stuff.

The reviews on the camera have been really positive. Since I did not see Mr Mom in the video I hope he is not having a contract dispute with the studio.. :whew:

No contract dispute with Mr Mom. We've been busy with non-shooting/editing stuff. He will have some cameos in the near future. :fg:

I agree on Sony's proprietary challenges. Fortunately, the codec was free with the free software. I have no need for their software since PrPro & Bridge fit my needs. I did think about a mirrorless 4/3rds camera, but didn't want to invest in lenses. This model has a very nice lens. Less to carry around too with a fixed lens. The video mode does a major crop. I was surprised the first time I set up the shot. Good to know for future framing.
