The Selfly drone

Talk about the advent of Drone photography and video.

The Selfly drone

Postby sidd finch » Fri Jan 12, 2018 1:09 pm

This looks like a pretty cool idea for a drone. There are some constraints ....like it only flies for 4-5 minutes. But ,it does take 1080p 30fps video and it only costs $130. Best of all the case attaches to your smartphone.

Seems like this would be a cool pairing if you wanted to record video with your smartphone and then be able to add some footage from the air. Or, you wanted to shoot drone footage but did not want to spend a fortune to see if it was something that you liked to do.

For sure! But they need to better clarify that one's phone does not fly on board the drone -- rather, it snaps into the detached drone carrying case to then control the aircraft (not everyone will see the video demonstration). Currently, their ad reads:

AEE Aviation Selfly "Flying Smartphone Case" at CES 2018

Given the fact that there are millions of selfies created every day, this device has tremendous potential.

One possible fly in the ointment is that a new law decrees that all unmanned aircraft must be registered with the FAA.

To fly under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft you must:

Fly for hobby or recreation ONLY
Register your model aircraft
Fly within visual line-of-sight
Follow community-based safety guidelines and fly within the programming of a nationwide community-based organization
Fly a drone under 55 lbs. unless certified by a community-based organization
Never fly near other aircraft
Notify the airport and air traffic control tower prior to flying within 5 miles of an airport*
Never fly near emergency response efforts

Clarification: for hobbyists, it's the pilot, not the aircraft, that must be registered -- i.e., a hobbyist needs only one registration to fly multiple different aircraft.

Commercial pilots, on the other hand, must register each of their aircraft.

The registration is pretty painless and registration costs $5 and is valid for 3 years. Only need to register one regardless of the number of drones you own for hobby.

You also need to add the FAA number to your physical aircraft.

Yes, but there are some not to say many Americans who don't want to be members of any federal database. Problem is, if memory serves, the fine for failing to register is up to $27,500, plus possible jail time. These facts may adversely impact sales.
